Re: "Service Active Handling Soon" (427CPE)
What are the codes?
When I first got my car I was getting C1287 & C1288 (Steering wheel Sensor). I brought the car into the dealer and they said no trouble found. The codes came back a few times after that. Eventually the codes stopped appearing on their own.
I got the same codes on mine at about 300 mi. Dealer went through the Tech Line ritual and replace the steering wheel sensor. No problems since then. (The new sensor looks quite different from the original and is apparently better protected from contamination).
I had this happen for a while and also I would sometimes notice my lights dim a little. I found the wires comming out of the fuse box next to the battery have a post and a nut. This was loose and under various conditions of driving this would loose a little of the connection and cause the problem where I would have to restart the car and reset the damn thing. It probably want be that simple for you, to much to hope for but give it a try.

Follow these instructions to bring up the codes. Click Me
Bring up the codes but do not delete them yet. Report the codes here. Some of them might be history and your dealer may just delete them and send you on your way.

Re: "Service Active Handling Soon" (427CPE)
All of these codes are History codes (not present right now).
1221 & 1222 = Wheel speed sensor errors
1248 = Dynamic rear proportioning. Can be set if two rear wheel sensors cause an error. Was probably causes by the 1221 & 1222
1288 - This is the one I was expecting. Steering wheel sensor error. I had this error occur numerous times when my car was an infant.
I would not bring the car into the dealer just yet. I would erase all of the codes (follow the WWW site link listed above.). Make sure all codes are gone. Double check that you reset all of the codes. Be sure they are all deleted out of history.
The next time you get the code while driving bring up the codes while the car is still running. At that point the code should be shown as current "C". See which code is coming back. I suspect the C1288 will come back for a while. It will eventually go away as the steering wheel sensor 'breaks in'. If not, the sensor will need to be replaced.
You dealer will just delete the codes and send you on your way. Do yourself a favor and just delete them and watch for their return as I instructed.
I had this same warning a few times when my 01 Z06 was new. I still get it every 2-3 months, but it is not repeatable. I am going to check the codes as described and see what I find.

I think this is only true if you have a poor dealer with a marginal C5 tech. The first time I took mine in the tech did the "first" fix: Raise the front end and cyle the steering wheel lock to lock 100 time. About a week later I got the 1288 code again and called the dealer. They ordered the new sensor and called me when it arrived. After the new sensor was installed, the code has never recurred (about 1500 miles so far). The "1288" problem is well known to GM and they do have a fix for it.

Well I guess I should have said the dealer will connect a Tech II to your car and run a steering wheel position sensor test. The sensor will probably pass, the dealer will delete the code and then send you on your way. They are not going to pull your steering column for this right away. I would put some mileage on the car before worrying about it too much.
I lifted my car in my garage and did the 100 turns lock to lock at the 700mile mark and that did not seem to help because I got the code a few more times in the next few weeks. My car now has 3500 miles and I have not seen the code since about the 1500 mile mark.
