I had a 01 C5 vert until a month ago when one of our senior citizens ran a light and did $22k in front end damage. :mad :mad The insurance insisted it could be fixed and only after threatening them with a diminished value claim did they decide to total it. (pics available to those that want to see what a 40mph crash will do to your car.
I have sence ordered a 03 Z06 that was to be completed Nov 25 with a december delivery. I didn't buy it the first time because I really want a convertible.
An outfit in Canada will turn the Z into a vert - any of you gone that route or advice on pros and cons would be appeciated. I have no interest in racing just like the feeling of 405hp and wind in my hair! :)
Thanks - my new Z06 is also Silver - can't wait to see it. I'm new to this forum and I have no idea why this posted as a poll? I tried to redo it and shut off the poll but havn't a clue.
Hell, If you have the cash(12 grand), go for it. I hear Carravaggio does a fine job.....they better for that kind of money. I would do it in a second if I had the money. I have seen pics, and they look great. I am not the biggest fan of the mod red interior, but I think it looks great on the Z-verts(with the top down) that I have seen(pics). Do it if you can afford it and have fun. You only go around once!!!!!!!
Keep it fixed roof (Z06). Buy a vert and if doesn't have the giddiyup and go, get it tuned. It's only money. But for outright flinging around and such, nothing beats the rigid feel of a FRC (Z06).
The Canadian company charges $12k US. I have been speaking to the body shop at the Chevy dealer I am buying the car from and they will do it for a lot less - around $8k. They both use all GM parts. I saw the cars at Carlisle and you can do them without the red interior - you do what you want to pay for. I spoke to GM at the same show and was told that the C5 was designed / built as a vert to be sure the structural integrety would be superior - not converting a hard top with extra bracing.
If you put a vert next to a Z06 (i did) you can see where the lines are identical. There us no "cutting" of the body. You just replace the top and back panel with the conv. top and panel that folds up.
have a 99 frc and wouldn't change it for the world...a few mods and the horsepower is there!!! heck for 12g's you could make well over 600h.p. how sick would that Z be??? Personally, there was a reason why those brilliant engineers at GM designed the Z06 (frc's)
Did mine myself  It was not really that big of an ordeal,I bought a used but mint top(they are out there)and purchased everything new from GM and it was fairly inexpensive.I bought my car wrecked in the first place and it has turned into a major project and making it a convertible was just another mod.Its not quite done yet but pretty much down to painting a few body panels and re-installing the drivetrain,I will have it ready by spring.

Crashed 94 - I would like more info on how you did it. I'm new to the forum so not sure if this is something you take off line? Simple description and any photos is what I'm looking for.
I agree in that it doesn't look that difficult - (all things are realitive, I have my 72 C3 in about 5,000 pieces doing a body off resto)
I also know good tops are out there - my 01 C5 is now on State Farms web site being auctioned off after my accident and it was perfect from the doors back.:mad
Thanks for the input.
Does making a Z06 a convertible or a targa top diminish the resale value of the car, or would it increase it? Does Chevy do the targo top conversion as well?

I had Caravaggio convert mine about a year ago. Almost 20K miles later, it's still solid as a rock. The work is top-quality and you would be hard pressed to tell it from a factory job. I don't think it's quite as easy as pulling off and replacing a few panels, but I could be wrong there. I have some pictures of my conversion if you're interested in seeing the work involved. Like you, I have little interest in racing, so doing the big $$ performance mods didn't hold much appeal for me. In converting the Z, I feel like I got a much more unique car. To each his own though. It's a big chunk of change to spend to have someone cut the roof off your brand new car, and I'm sure it's not for everyone. Personally, I have no regrets what so ever.

I belive that would be immoral, ungodly, and even illegal in some states... :conehead
Pape Chevrolet. I have bought two other cars there - 02 C5 and a 98 Camero for my daughter. When I totaled the C5 they were very good to deal with and helped me out - so they get the order for the 03.
Also - very big point - I work for a company that allows us to recieve the GM supplier pricing which is 4% above their cost. Not sure if it is really 4% but the price is the same at any dealer in the US and it was around $6-$7k off sticker. The deal is good on any GM but not all dealers will let you use it on a Corvette - Pape does. Also they have a sales guy, Chad, who grew up with Vetts and knows his stuff.
Another company who make the conversion is Skunk Werkes in the Detroit area. This company made the first conversions and is owned by two very well known Corvette people from GM. The first one was a black Z06 (owned by a local club member and the second was yellow. Fine workmanship and virtually identicle to a stock convertable except the Z06 parts. Also, they made some awsome custom seats that accept 6 point harness.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
