Default Rearview Mirror

Greetings again C5 Gururs
I am a new discovery owner of a 50thAE, and have a tech general question.
I have been investagating all componets of this 50thAE, and I've relearned myself to the new technolgy, all except the rearview mirror. I've looked in the owner's manual, and low and be hold , PO had a aftermarket rearview mirror installed somewhere in previous life. Its a a Homelink model with temp and compass. Was the factory installed have the same features? Map lights, programmable garage door remote, and temp and compass? The reason i ask this i have been trying to program a garage door to it and have been unsucessful. Any help in ths would be very helpful, and most appreicated .

Thanks in advance
Max

No. The OEM mirror had map lights and a low glow amber light but no compass or Homelink. Funny, because I would like to swap out my OEM mirror for one with Homelink, however I can't find any that would work with my 2004 Corvette that also has map lights. Any pics of your current mirror? Does it have map lights?

This video may help with your programming.

Try these instructions from an 04 Avalanche:First, turn your vehicle’s ignition switch to the second position. This is sometimes called the accessory position.

Now, find the HomeLink buttons on your mirror. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons releasing them only when the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash. That will happen after approximately 20 seconds.

Now HomeLink is in training mode and you’re ready to program the system

Now, place the hand held transmitter 1 to 3 inches away from the HomeLink surface keeping the HomeLink indicator light in view.

Now, you’ll need to decide which HomeLink button you want to program. Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold both the desired HomeLink button and handheld transmitter button.

Don’t release the buttons until the HomeLink indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, that’s the sign that your programming was successful. Now
both buttons may be released.

In this next step, press and hold the programmed HomeLink button and observe the indicator light.
  • If the indicator light is solid and continuous, programming is complete and your device should activate when the HomeLink button is pressed and released.
If the indicator light blinks rapidly for 2 seconds before turning a solid/continuous light, it means that you have what is called a rolling code garage door opener. That requires additional programming steps.

To Program a rolling code garage door opener make sure you have completed the previous steps, then proceed with the following actions.

You will need to access the garage door opener receiver also called the motorhead unit in your garage. Once you’re there, you need to find the “learn” or “smart” button. It’s usually near where
the hanging antenna wire is attached to the unit. The name and color of the button may vary by manufacturer. If you have difficulty in finding the training button, reference your garage door opener manual.

Once you’ve found the “learn” or “smart” button, press and release it. Please note that once the button is pressed, you have 30 seconds to initiate the next step.

Return to the inside of the vehicle and firmly press and hold the programmed HomeLink button for 2 seconds and release. Be sure to repeat the press/hold/release sequence up to 3 times to
complete the training process. HomeLink should now activate your rolling code-equipped device.

Mr MSG5...........Thank you for your post Its looks very much the same as in the video link you posted only difference is has the temp under the compass heading and yes it has a map light in the center of the bottom side, comes on as a courtsey light with the door , and with a switch

Mr rw03 Vette.......thanks for the hints you post , I will try those

Mr Sunwarrior............Thanks for your post , I tried to get a click pic but failed But the large numbers on the back were like this: A circle with E-11 iside the circle with this number following 015614. Not sure if it is the model number, they were the largest ones i could make out .

I do like the inside rear view mirrior and it doesnt look out of place or ghalkey. I looks like it could have been Std equip from Boiling Green
Thanks again for everyone's reply and help......This entire FORUM has always been helpful . I like to read the threads of things here and in OT
Alot of times it has helped me in the past with my other vettes (76,73,79,67). Sir John "Z" in the C2 section is i my opinion the King of Helpful Knowledge.
I'll repost when I get this mirrior programed.

If you have a Genie Intellicode opener, the procedure is really complicated.

I bought a Gentex 341 for my car. It has a green compass/temp readout to match the rest of the GM lighting.
If I were to do it all over, Id try to find a mirror that uses a positive trigger for the courtesy lights instead of negative.

Thats good to know Mr Autoeng..........it still looks like it was made for the car. How would i find out what years it covers? Email GENTEC?
It is a really nice rearview mirror , just having a little hard time programing the thing.
Oh btw the garage openers are Hormann brand...silent drive #5500 about 5 yrs old. The other choice is to but another remote ($40 on fleabay) and put it the car. But i was trying to avoid it if possible.
Bad experience one time not to change the subject: I bought a new car remote for the wife's Equinox, to replace a lost one. Went on line and printed off the programing instructuions, and it wouldnt program. Went to a locksmith, they cut the key (swith blade key $35 to cut). went out to the car with it , wouldnt start the car, was told the orginal fob had to be in the car, Okay that worked ! this was on a friday afternoon. Went to GM dealership, ask them if they could program the fob, Why yes ! after sitting in the customer lounge for an hour and twenty mintues, They came me and said they can't program a AFTER MARKET fob, only OEM. So 247 dollars later a programed key . Just a little gun shy

But thanks for everyone's rely , I'll try them all

A lot of people swap those mirrors in. They are quite handy.

I'm on the lookout for one in the boneyard myself. I want one to get rid of my visor-mounted garage door opener so I can get rid of the sun visors entirely. They're relatively useless anyway.

they stopped making the Sebring in 2010 so I’d look for garage door programming instructions for a 2010 Sebring

thanks again Mr Autoeng, Ill defintely try that. I was looking in rockauto last night and i think i found what seems to be a C5 mirror. Under the trade name ACDELCO. Didnt ever know that ACDELCO was in body parts business only performance parts like spark plugs, wires, etc.

I guess expect the unexpected

Did some digging for you...

Since we have established that the mirror is Gentex 015614, I went to their site. In their Product Support FAQs, for Homelink programming, you are directed to go to www.homelink.com.

Click on the Program option (not the dropdown at the top but the link next to Compatibilty, Homelink Connect, etc).

Select "Program a garage door opener". From there you can try either the above suggested Sebring/Stratus or click on "I have aftermarket HomeLink". After you click Next, select your brand of opener, the either watch the video or view the printable instructions.

Please let us know how your experience with programming the Homelink portion of your mirror turns out. If it's still not working, then the PO may not have hooked up the wiring correctly. In that case you might have to look at the wiring and trouble shoot the connections.
I'm very interested in buying one of these mirrors myself, and the homelink feature is the key. I could easily see myself in your situation - comparing the Corvette wiring diagram to the Sebring wiring diagram to determine which wire goes where.

Good Luck!
