Hey guys. I have a 2004 vert. I have no issues at all with my front tire TPMS. However, the rear driver side has a VERY MINOR leak that requires me to fill the tire once a month or so. The passenger side rear works fine about 85% of the time. However. every now and then the car can't get a reading from just that one tire. It's not a huge deal, but it would be nice to fix it. I know this is a common issue on our cars, and that my 2004 uses a different sensor than the older C5s do. I see that Ecklers has replacement sensors for around $80.00 each. I'm pretty sure I can have them them installed for about the price of a mount and balance. My question is what is involved in programming the new sensors? Is it something that I can do myself? if not, how much would the programming cost? I was just hoping to replace the two rear wheel sensors, as I've never had any issues at all with the fronts. Can anybody point me to something that breaks down the programming steps? Thanks!
Programming is very simple. You can get less expensive sensors than Eckler's as well. It's a fairly standard 315mhz tire sensor. Nothing special about it.
The leak you describe could very well be a bead leak caused by corrosion products on the wheel bead. Make sure the wheel beads are cleaned to remove deposits before remounting the tire after sensor replacement.
If they are the original ones, I would just replace all of them. Rockauto has them priced from $23.97 to $43.79. Who ever you purchase them from I would program them first before putting them inside the tire.Just make sure to mark the location. Also look at the date of manufacturing on the actual unit.Rock had fresh dated units.Home depot or lowes has magnets you can use.
There is also a tpms service kit if needed, if your sensors you purchase do not come with nuts you an use the original nuts.
I found a company called TPMS 24/7. I purchased a proper set of 4 (315 mhz) for around $84. Fast service on receiving order and replaced originals. Just follow instructions on DIC to reset with magnet or tire installer can do it for you takes about 1 minute to set
Thanks for the help everyone. My new sensors have been shipped, and I ordered a magnet off of Amazon which should arrive tomorrow. I'm planning to just reuse the old nuts. I'm reasonably sure that the bead is not leaking, but I'll make sure that they are cleaned before the tires are re-mounted. I really appreciate all the help.
