Default Hub Stands

I have not seen anything on the forum regarding hub stands so I thought I’d share some pics. I picked up a set, installed them in preparation for the upcoming winter storage. The car is supported by the stands and it keeps a load on the suspension. I put my rims and tires in the basement and keep them out of the cold which is never good for any performance tire.

Looks good but seems like more work than what it's worth.

Those are really cool, and I can appreciate their function, and I can understand your desire to keep your tires out of a cold garage. HOWEVER................

There's always the possibility, no matter how slight, that in an emergency, you'd want to get the car out of the garage...NOW. With your car supported by those stands, you can't. I can see, though, how they could be helpful when you're doing some sort of quick maintenance job.

This brings up the question of what I do, during the winter, to preserve my tires from the cold. I'm the original owner of my C-5, and when the car was about 2 years old, I unfortunately ran over a piece of debris that put a severe cut in the LR tire, right where the sidewall and tread met. The tire still held air, but damage at that point on a tire, makes it unusable. I replaced the one tire, but over time, the OE tires wore at a quicker rate, with the RR wearing more quickly than the LR, and the difference in OD became more pronounced, and the limited slip clutch pack was VERY unhappy.

Since I was thinking of a set of custom wheels, anyway, I bought 4 wheels and 4 tires at that time. I kept the OE wheels, with those tires on them, and use them to store the car on, during the winter.

I wish I could put on any C5/C6 rim & tire set but the issue I have is that I would need 18/19 rims to clear my brakes and they would cost more than the Hub Stands did (even used rims & tires). Plus, I'd have to store them when not being used.

Never even heard of such a thing. Pretty neat but they are not cheap, at least the ones I saw looking them up.
It's new to me that one should not let summer tires get cold. All I ever heard was just not to drive with summer tires in the winter. Lucky for me, the garage where I keep my C5s is heated. I set the heaters to 45 degrees but not for the tires, but for everything else I have stored out there (like paint, etc)

In my case, I think it would be a combination of the cold, as well as the weight of the car sitting on the tires, in the same position for 4 months, that could cause issues. Since I have an alternative course of action, and C-5 tires aren't all that cheap, it's what I do. My wife also has a "summer driver", but since I don't have any "spare" wheels an tires for it, all I can do is inflate the tires to 42 PSI, and put some carpet squares under the tires. One other thing, my garage, although attached to the house, is unheated. It's not uncommon for the temps in it to get down to 0*F or even lower.....

Same here attached garages aren’t that warm unless they are heated. My garage is fully dry walled three of the four walls are insulated meaning the garage doors insulated and it’s probably 10° warmer inside the garage and it is on the outside.

The entire weight of the car is supported on the studs for the wheels?

Out of curiosity, what do you think the wheels and tires, which support the entire weight of the car, are attached to?

am just wondering... does the corvette factory take all the tires off the cars when they are built in the winter and store them inside until the cars are ready to transport ?

Corvette wheels are hub centric. The weight is on the hub lip, not the lug studs.

Not so sure. They always seem pretty loose to me before the nuts are tightened. To have the hub carry the load, the fit would have to be very tight.
