Just sold my C7 7 speed that I had put a MGW shifter and it was daylight over dark better than the factory shifter but difficult install so paid a mechanic to do it.... now I just bought a 2004 with a six speed manual and the shifter lacks a lot.... so my question what is available to replace it and how difficult would be the install? Thanks, CJ

The shifter swap out is pretty easy with the C5. The console-radio bezel removal is a snap. Most seem pretty happy with what MGW offers for the C5. Some are happy with a C6 shifter. There’s a former vendor (TMODCUSTOMS) that rebuilds the shifter lower box with better bearings and seals and also sells a shift lever. There’s a simple “Anti Venom” mod where you put a copper washer or two to displace the shifter detent which may help with notchy shifting.

Assuming that the factory shifter ”ball” has been replaced and you don’t have to remove the demon key. That took me 45 minutes alone when I first changed it out.

There's some different brand short shifters in the C5 classifieds.

I installed a MGW flat stick shifter years ago too. The MGW website has Removal and Installation videos.
If you click on the Flat Stick, the next page at the bottom has the videos.
I do most of my own wrenching, so I watched those twice before I started. No problems.

The install is extremely easy. The hardest part for me was finding where my d@mn shift **** rolled off to when I bumped it off my seat accidentally.

the difference is huge in feel

MGW is probably the best shifter out there for the C5, the shifter arm is different between the 5/6/7
It might be the only brand that comes with the lower shift box, which is why I think it all works so smoothly

I run the factory shifter on a TMOD box with the Delrin bushings and the anti-venom mod. I like to try and keep things fairly stock-looking. When I rest my hand on top of the factory shifter/shift **** I'm in easy reach of the radio buttons.....

On their website. Three videos.

I installed mine awhile back. I recommend either gloves or extreme caution when installing the sound deadener material, damn, that metal foil is sharp.

Lots of options out there, I have tried a few different ones though not the MGW.
My overall favorite is a shortened stock shifter, with a TMod rebuilt lower box. Nice positive action, modest length throws.
Combine with fresh fluid and the Anti Venom mod, and it's great.
Good luck!

One thing I found that made a noticeable difference is a heavy shift **** . . . one that weighs at least a pound or so. Seems to help in making shifts smoother and more positive.

Thanks everyone, I watched the videos on the MGW web site and it looks like MAYBE I could handle that with out TOO much cussing.... the older I get the more difficult everything seems... starting with getting out of bed.... hit 76 this year and sure isn't like 40 any more! Thanks again, Courtney

Curious as to why you went from a C7 to a C5. Did you have a C5 before? How would you compare the two cars?

God help me, I wish it were so! I turn 71 this month and seem to feel every damn year of it! Perhaps the old saying "it ain't the age, its the mileage" is true. Best wishes to all!

if you haven’t looked already, I recall several videos on YouTube for shifter installs. I ended up putting the C6 shifter on my last C5.
