People seem to over use it here or use it more generally. On other boards/discords it's usually used when a poster is about to spark controversy or flare up an augment between two or more members/camps. The person posting popcorn doesn't have a stake in the fight but is a regular who knows the boards meta and is awaiting what will surely be a good show, popcorn in hand.
I have lubed my door hinges a few times. I used to used WD-40, but changed to Marine Lube because I saw the video by Lyle at C&S awhile back. Much like WD-40, Marine Lube comes with a straw that can attach to the spray can. While I wouldn't just spray the hinge without the straw, you don't need a needle and syringe either. The straw allows for precise placement with enough pressure behind it to get it between the hinge pieces. The bottom hinge is by far the most important, but I lube all the hinges. I shove the straw right up against where the two parts of the hinge meet up. I move the straw horizontally around the round part of the hinge to get the lube all around. I also lube around the "catch points" in the bottom hinge as well. I will then gently open and close the door to work the lube in. If needed, you can repeat this process until the door opens and closes easily with no creaking or squeaking. There's no such thing as too much lube in this situation, so don't be shy with your application. If the lube drips down onto the front of the door sill, just clean off the door sill, but leave any excess oil on the hinges. This has always worked well for me. You'll be shocked at the difference it makes if you've never done it before.
Thanks Warlord. One last thing though. I've never owned a boat and know less about boats than i do about Corvettes (if thats even possible) Anyway, i thought Marine Lube was a generic term for "lube used on boats". You speak of it as more like a brand. I definitely would like one with a straw.
One can buy super lube, a modern, kind of thick, space age teflon infused lube, in a somewhat clumsy plastic needle type dispenser, or a better thin metal needle dispenser, if you can find it. I think I got mine at a bike shop, filled with Shimano bike lube, with a very thin needle as part of a flex tube with a shirt pocket clip. precision oilers can be found at hobby , gun , fishing stores, or a place that deals in Radio controlled stuff , or if you can find one, the last toy train store on the planet.
Chogan....The syringe has new 30w oil in it. Its lubed many hinges over the years and allows oil to get into the hinge surface and roller pins while making a minimal mess. I'm glad you got a good rise out of my post.
I have been using motor oil for years to lube stuff on old cars. In fact, my 1962 vette owners manual says to use oil on several spots that need to be lubed around the car.

Same, it soaks into joints nicely - just be sure to wipe excess off so it doesn't collect dust/dirt. I use the needle method as well - no carpet bombing for me.

Exactly....in this world of high tech lubes and spray cans a needle allows me to put a few drops of oil just where I want it and still keep my hinges nice and clean.

When you click on the pop emoji, it says "lurk" It means just that, I'm lurking to see what others post as I too am interested in what the topic is. That's it, no sparking controversy, no flaring up arguments, just lurking. You don't know me but I rarely, if ever, say or do anything negative. I'm just curious about the hinges myself as I own three C5s.
