Default Spare tire

Anyone have a suggestion on a spare tire? I have heard that a Camaro spare will fit. My car has run flats on it now, but when they are replaced, I don't want them. Only would carry the spare and a jack on long trips.

Thanks!

I know the GTO spare works because some guys use those wheels as front runners at the dragstrip. Not sure how easily they are gotten now days but you might be able to pick up a cheap used one.

Default No real need for a spare

When you replace your current tires have some tire sealant put in. Green Slime is a good brand name. Get a tire plug kit and keep it and a small air pump/tire inflator with you. The pump can either clip onto your battery, like jumper cables or plug into the cigarette lighter. Make sure your AAA membership is up to date. Some tire manufacturers or tire installation shops or even your insurance company offer road side assistance nationwide!

Spare tire? AAA.

You have two different sized wheels and tires.

If you convert to a square setup, which is totally feasible, you can run a spare. Now where do you store it? Do you sit it in the back cargo area? And what if you get in an accident and it goes flying and decapitates you?

How many miles do you drive the car per year? How many flat tires do you get in a year's mileage? In a decade's? When was the last time you changed one on the side of the road?

AAA.

Yep! I seriously can't remember the last time I had a flat.

Right. I've had one, and oddly it was in the Corvette, but a phone call and 45 minutes later it was back at my house and I had a new tire installed the next day. Not worth the drawbacks to me.

I've had two "flats" on the Z06. Neither time did I get stranded. The first was a slow leak and would lose 2-5 psi / day. The second was losing 5-8 psi every 30 miles. I stopped a few times to get home as I was 100 miles from home. I do not use run flats and I added the TPMS as it was not an option. I have an inflator and towing if needed. I've driven approximately 135k on this car.

Also of note: the GTO spare isn't a direct bolt on affair. It has a slightly smaller hub bore diameter. You'd need to machine it to fit. Some guys do just grind it gently by hand, but either way it should be noted.

I have thought about a spare but first I would have to go square. I do carry a plug kit and flatfix.

Two cans of Flatfix got me 1/4 mile home with this one, just barely-

If you carry a spare you will also need a jack of some type and a lug wrench.

If you follow the tire sealant advice, be aware of the service life for your sealant of choice once it is in the tire, most of that stuff has an unopened shelf life of a couple of years, and will get progressively harder over time, once exposed to air. , that is why most consider sealant only a crutch to enable the tire to be repaired, and is not marketed as a preventative to be used ahead of time. It's not that hard to wash off when fresh, like when repairing a damaged tire that is already opened. All you really risk is a disgusted look when you warn the guy on the tire machine. I haven't had any experience with changing that type of fluid, but thought it might be a concern worth mentioning.

Slime will attack chrome, so will accelerate the degradation of the air seal that happens with chrome. I don't know if that reaction holds with all formulations throughout the industry, green slime is the only brand I checked.

Like most here, I carry a small kit, flash light, inflator , gloves and sealant. I would just use the spare tire in a can, but the tires are big enough that one can won't do it, so a space saving kit, along with a phone and tow card are also part of my deal. Steel belted tires really changed the game. I used to get the occasional flat in an antique that I ran around town in that used inner tubes. With conventional tires, I have had only one flat, after taking an ally next to a construction zone, I think the time span between flats was over twenty years or more, but can easily say it was a lot of miles traveled.

Thanks for all the replies. I know it would not be ideal to put a spare on one of these cars, but I have had enough flats on long road trips, and I've been stranded for hours waiting for someone to come and rescue me. I prefer the have it not need it, then to need it and not have it approach to life.

Check out Modernspare.com. Entire spare tire kit for under $500. You get a wheel/tire assembly, jack, tools and a carry bag. I purchased one for my Z/28 and may get one for my Z06. Good peace of mind being able to control an unfortunate situation and not wait around for somebody to come drag your pride and joy onto a flatbed.

Still in all the threads on this that have been posted, no one has been able to answer where they will store their decapitating projectile in the event of an accident.

I just carry a AAA card. I believe I also have towing through Hagerty too? I should probably go check on that

AAA.
How many flat tires have I (and my relatives) had in the past 10 years? A rather high number, as Florida (and nearly every other state) is one big construction zone. My retired father's "public service" hobby is walking through our sleepy neighborhood with a magnet on a stick and gathering roofing nails and bent screws from the road. Unbelievable, the number of nails and screws he picks up. I've had nails and screws and random pieces of metal embedded in the tread and sidewalls. As for a spare tire killing somebody in an accident, simply strap the tire down. Most people are driving with plenty of other loose items behind the seat that could kill them, anyway. How about a case of pop or beer that becomes a missile in an accident? I carry a 17 inch GTO spare only on long trips to deal with a front flat, but I'm thinking of getting an 18 inch extra rear rim, so I could put it on the back or the front. Wouldn't be proper on the front, but would get me off the dangerous free. As for AAA, it took them 6 hours one time and 4 hours another time to find a tow truck/flat bed capable of handling a low car like my Corvette C5. You can imagine how dangerous it was, being at the side of the freeway, risking instant death if some drowsy or drunk or texting driver hit me. I learned NOT to depend on AAA.

If it makes you feel better, I guess.

Hard pass for me. Seems like a huge waste of already precious space to carry an extra 18" wheel.
