After I complete this first round of mods to the engine should I even try and fire the car up before taking it to the tuner? I’m doing heads, cam, headers, off-road xpipe which deletes the rear o2 sensors, I’m removing the secondary air system as well. I’ve got a handful of other changes but nothing that I believe would require a tune. Do I just load it on a tow truck or am I safe to fire it up first?
Should be able to fire it up if you dont change the injectors. Once it goes into closed loop it will idle rough. Still would prob get it towed if it is more than a 10 min drive and it will be hard to get there even then and will foul plugs a little.
Yeah, should definitely be able to fire it up. I did and drove mine untuned for 3-4 days before my shop was able to get it in. I drove it very gingerly and kept the RPMs below 3,000 but it was fine. Changed plugs while I was there and sent it.
The shop I went to was able to do a "bench tune" (bring the PCM to them outside of the car) based on the specs of the cam, injectors, and other mods. Then they give you a credit for the amount of the bench tune on your street and/or dyno tune when you have the car completed. If you've got an HP Tuners MPVI2, a lot of tuners can just email you the baseline tune to load into the car.
I would say it depends on how extreme your setup is. If you went with a big cam, you might want to tow it. If not, you could probably drive it a bit. As other have said, take it easy on the throttle, and don't drive it too far.
The bench tune is also not a bad idea if your tuner will do that for you.

How big of a cam are we talking here?
it’s not too extreme. It’s the Texas Speed 228R so 228/228 .600 .600 114lsa.
