If you're that worried about a power surge, just use a surge protector. Although I would think most higher end tenders probably have built in surge protection.

Thanks for all the helpful information. I have discovered that both my Cigarette lighter and the power outlet in the counsel are both hot with the key off. So I have elected to use the plug in adapter to the Cigarette lighter to power my Tender. It's only 1.25 amps.

As mentioned above, the cigarette lighter and the power outlets in the console are both hot with the key off. As for a power surge, the electrical company installed surge protectors at the main electrical panels.
