Just got my '01 Z06 back from the dealer today after a week in the shop doing the piston re-ring. The mechanic that did it said it was definitely the issue as evidently there was excessive burned oil on the top of the pistons -- prior to this I averaging 512 miles per quart.
SOTP test is awesome! I'm spinning the wheels now without trying--no WOT, in first and second. Anyone else experienced this kind of improvement?
My Z seemed to be a little less ballsy when I first got it back from the rering. After about a 1000 miles the oomph was back and then some! Glad i did it. No oil problems since. :yesnod:
interesting note on your part..better performance after re-ringing...
just put in my 1st quart of Mobil-1 AFTER my re-ring...2793 miles (was 500!). new master cylinder didn't cure hanging clutch..hear there's now a TSB to replace pressure plate...oh well, back to the dealer!
I noticed no change in performance due to rering...BUT!!!!
...interestingly....i'll share an experience i had BEFORE i had it reringed... i don't trust "seat of the pants" performance measurements...especially the notion of a change that makes "better performance"....but i noticed she just didn't seem to have the same bad manners in 2nd that she did when i bought her....i was getting 500 miles per quart, always burning 93 octane (chevron/texaco)....i realized that the engine management system was optimizing performance...until the "knock sensors" sense the motor pinging...then retarding timing and enriching mixture....
...i just had a hunch that 500 miles per quart might have coated the piston and combustion chamber with a million little glow-plugs preigniting the mixture and fooling the EMS into detuning the motor....so i added a can of Techron top-end cleaner to a tank of fuel...
Results....ok, this is anecdotal, but in houston on a 97 degree saturday, she would still take the hide off the rougue Mustang...that day: start in 2nd and floor it, chugged out of the hole, pulled hard...nothing exceptional.
Put 150 miles on that treated tank Saturday
Next day, sunday, same temp, humidity, time of day, and same stretch of road/traffic light....start from stop in 2nd, floor it....chugs out of the hole, then at 2800 rpm it just flamed the real wheels....couldn't believe the power difference!....tried it a few more times (to rule out an oily patch of road)....same results.
Since then i have made sure to keep a clean engine, which is was when i turned it in for reringing...i suspect that you might be reaping the benefits of a clean top end yourself.
oh well......just anecdotal common sense....wish i had before/after time slips....perhaps one of you out there does?
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! :D :D My rering may or may not have given me more power but I did greatly extend the oil burning rate out to 1/2 qt per 4000 miles rather than qt per 800 miles.
The Z06 oil problem is mainly with '01s -- most, not all, '02's had the newer napier ring installed, however, there are exceptions -- rare. Just watch it.
