I have often pondered what it you took a C5 installed a 4.8 or alum 5.3 engine (we are NOT building a Prius here) change rear gears to 3.15, used smaller tires, like 225 front and 245 rear, this car would be a manual. I think with the right tune and mentioned mods you could get 40 plus ??? I think it would be a fun project and with gas prices well !!! any other brainstorms out there ???
I'm much more concerned with power and performance than I am about fuel economy. With the mods you propose, driving it would no longer feel like driving a Corvette. So with that said, you could just pull the engine and convert it to all electric. Then you won't use any gas at all. Plus, if you do it right, the car will be VERY fast.
I don't remember fully but I feel like someone already did this on youtube or something. They took a C5 with hp tuners and created a very narrow range in the VE table for lean cruise.
Supposed to run somewhat normal outside of that range but capable of crazy fuel mileage if you keep it in just the right spot.
I would think this would only really work for highway driving.
Even if you took Pounder's ideas while it would help for side street driving IMO 40mpg is impossible once any kind of stop light driving is involved.

first this is like a budget build, you would have enough power to run circles around a Prius.
Drove down to Indy Friday. Instant mileage was running around 30.5 mpg. That was a dream when I was a kid with a Chevelle. We used to draft trucks to get into the 20s. Had a buddy (still a great friend) who had a 71 and I a 69 (nice). They had motors that were very close in mods. We would drive to college together following each other. Man, those were the days.

With gas prices what they are now, 40 mpg sounds pretty good, but I for one would not want to give up the enjoyment I get from my stock engine. Getting between 25-30 mpg is good enough for me along with the performance capability.

Agree with Jack. Why own a Corvette if you are interested in getting MPG. If price of gas is an issue then maybe your should park it or sell your C5.
I guess some of you just don't get it !! my thread started by "I often pondered" the point of it was, if gas gets way out of sight I still want to drive a Vette and NO electric piece of crap !!!!
I don't think I would go the 4.8 or 5.3 route as you may not see significant mpg gains versus your 5.7. Rather, I would increase the compression ratio, long tubes, free flowing cats, etc. as far as engine mods. Make sure the car is running 100% in shape to eliminate preventable inefficiencies. I would also look for ways to reduce weight - wheels, tires, brakes, carbon body panels, etc. Most importantly, look to improve your driving habits to increase fuel mileage, like hypermiling.

A valid solution to your pondering is right in this thread. Buy HP tuners (while you still can) and play around with it.

Last year after I installed a vararam the fuel trims were stuck at +25%. I had a trinity tuner so changed the injecter slope to -15% and àdded +15% to the power enrichment. This let the PCM adjust the fuel trims. Before I did that I was getting around 22mpg. After I the adjustment I was getting around 30mpg when I drove it easy. This was on my trip to work so it wasn't much highway driving.
