This winter I’m planning on updating the old dated Bose system in my 01 coupe. I plan on adding new door speakers, rear speakers and a sub mounted down in the center hatch cubby, removing the factory cd changer. I’ve got a few questions about fit.
I’ve seen people mainly doing a 6.5 & 3.5 in the doors. Can you fit an 8 and a 3.5 in the doors?
I’ve seen some people say depth in the rear is an issue. Does anyone know what the max mounting depth is while still using the factory covers?
Personally, what I did was an 8 up front and a 1" compression driver, and no rear stage. You don't really need rear fill in a cabin this small. And there's PLENTY of depth up front to mess with.
Doing the 8s up front, is their still room to do a set of 3.5s? Do you need adapters?
My plan right now would be the 8s and 3.5 in the doors, 6.5s in the rear and a 10 in the center hatch. I don’t need the crazy bass anymore. I just want crisp clean sounds all around.
Plenty of room. I went with shallow neodymium 8s because I didn't know up front how much depth there was, but once I learned.... there's tons. I made my own adapter crudely out of some scrap plywood by tracing the old 6.5 adapter I had and cutting a bigger hole. The spacers on the screws that hold the compression driver on the second pic were only necessary because I upgraded to a bigger driver:
Original setup using Metra 6.5 adapter:
Traced that onto some scrap plywood and cut a bigger 8" hole:
Bigger compression driver for more loud, because I'm about that life:
