I need to replace my 02 drivers seat, especially the bottom , was gonna order new foam and redo the leather and foam and realized it seems that the Z06 seats are the standard foam, not the sport, Not sure why GM put standard seats in the Z06? maybe weight? Has anyone converted to sport seats in the Z06? i was thinking of buying the bottom sport foam and getting the new leather to fit that for more support? Before i bought this car i drove a few C 5s with the sport seats and really liked now they felt. I am just trying to think of the options out there. The passenger seat isn't in bad shape except outer near door bolster is a bit broken down. Thanks for any help!
Price and preferences depending, I agree with the above. The sport seats are no serious upgrade and I would not consider them worth the expense. My first two C5s had the sport seats. But once you go through a few corners you'll see you are still using your knees to remain centered in the cabin. I haven't tried C7 seats, but they appear to be good. Especially the option ones. Though the prices they demand are astronomical unless you find a deal. I am not fully current on their market but have seen them go for 2k to 3.5k. Then there are aftermarket, of which there are many options. I went with Corbeau A4s in black suede and they have served me well in corners and also in comfort on the commute. New seats with rails for the A4s are probably 1.2k. You can always sell your base seats, too. I sold my base Z06 seats for $550 I think.
OP - last year considered doing the same switch on my Z06. What I found is the frames are the same - just foam and covers different. Not sure if lumbar air bags have to be installed for best fit. I ended up sticking with the stock Z06/standard seats. Just personnal preference..

I gotta look up the free seat bolster mod!! and yeah leaning to just getting the stock standard foam and leather , even for how bad shape the seat is in, i drove the car 5 hours so must be fairly comfortable enough
I probably won't be super clear in my typing of this post, but a few points of interest on C5 seats in general.
Mid-1999 through 2004 the seat backs are all the same (base / Sport / Z06)
The seat base is the same (base / Sport / Z06)
The seat motors differ (non-memory versus memory; Z06 is memory)
The seat switches differ between modles (lumbar versus non-lumbar)
WIring matches the options (w or w/o memory, w or w/o lumbar)
As such, the Z06 is a memory seat without lumbar that uses base style seat covers. My driver seat came out of a Z06 and I converted it to be a Sport seat with memory with lumbar using the lumbar system and wiring harness / switch from a Sport seat as the Sport seat I had was salvaged from a flood car.
I'm slightly less familiar with the 1997 through mid-1999 seats, but my experience is as follows:
The lumbar system differs on the early seats and use a "flap" system rather than molded sides. Whether that flap is present in a non-lumbar seat, I don't know.
There are still differences between memory and non-memory motors / wiring
The lumbar system plugs and locations differ (mid-99+ are under the seat, early cars are a black box on the front of the seat).
That being said, as long as you match up the number of plugs to the car (two for a memory or one for a non-memory) they all play nice. My MY99 has dual power seats with driver side memory. I removed the stock seats stupdily for Corbeau A4s and sold them. I ended up trading my Corbeaus for a set of 1997 Sport non-memory seats and I had a set of 2004 memory seats from a flood car. I also acquired a 2004 Z06 seat. From that I was able to build a memory / lumbar Sport seat that used all 2004 style connections for the driver side and I used the 1997 passenger side seat as-is. Is it concours, no, but all the seat functions work.
To the OP, if you're willing to rip the seat apart, I'd invest in the lumbar as it will help out a lot in terms of grip and comfort for only probably $200-250 in parts.
Thanks guys!!!! Thanks for finding the bolster mod, was gonna look for it tonight! and great info on all the seat options/years etc. Def helps alot! Def gotta tackle the project this winter and might as well do the passenger, its kinda getting compressed also.
