The Cadillac XLR (Caddy version of a Corvette) had a retractable hardtop. I don't know if they could be modded to work on a C5, or not. Seems like it would take up a lot of trunk space, which is important........To the wife!
That is cool. However, having a retractable hardtop isn't worth paying 3 times as much for the car. That asking price is almost enough to buy a C8 with a retractable hardtop!
2002 Rare Chevrolet Corvette with retractable hardtop,Very rare,One of two in existance,Only three were made and one was destroyed,Retractable hardtop.
Wow, I never seen one, I guess I've never even heard of one before. Pretty neat but no way in hell would I pay over $60k for one.
According to the article for $18,000 you too can have one and the company said they've done "approximately a dozen" so it's not quite that rare.
The green one on CL is FS @ $26,000
It's not too clear in the photo but top down you only have enough room left for a couple water bottles and a micro fiber towel.
They do Challenger convertibles also but those are canvas top
I would rather see GM drop the targa top and go with either a convertible or a coupe/hatchback. The coupe/hatchback should have the option of a real powered and shaded moon-roof. It would make the car more stable, secure and dare - I - say, pleasant to live with. Press a button and you have the roof open at any speed. Open it only a little and you have ventilation. Pull the sun shade over and you are shaded from the strong sun. Push the sunshade back and you have the heavens above. All the while having a very stable platform for suspension and handling upgrades and less wiggling or rattles than with the targa. You also don't have to manhandle the targa when it's broiling in the summer or find a place to store it onboard or off.
I don't under stand the attraction of the targa. But I have both roofs and use them because it's a Corvette. It's time we change. They just put the engine in back and removed the shifter. It's time to fix the roof.
I do understand the attraction of a convertible. Nothing I said above changes my option of them. My next one will be a convertible. If I don't change this one.

Hard pass. Don't want the needless complexity and weight of a power hardtop or a moonroof mechanism - not to mention the reduced headroom

That's the first thing that came to mind was the reduced headroom as I'm 6'4" I'm not sure how I would fit in the C8 as it is already as that cockpit looks small to me.

Go sit in one. Surprisingly roomy inside. We have two pre-owned on the lot right now.
