Hey guys, I'm trying to get a get a nice looking z06 for a good price, but he has texas speed headers with xtreme corsa, and claims he has the high flow cats. Haven't raised the car so I don't know if it's true, and after checking the monitors, most were not ready as if he just cleared the codes. I'll include a screen shot of them at the end. There were a few stored o2 codes. Is it possible that the monitors look that way because of his tune? Because I have a big problem. In NY, I am only allowed one not ready. So I would not be able to register the car. Someone told me a tuner can take care of it, but I don't think they understood that by deleting the o2 sensors not to get the check engine light, it would still not help the monitor situation. Should I just forget about this car? Because i really don't feel like spending over a $1000 to install the stock headers and cats. From reading, I should be able to pass with high flow cats.. assuming he has them. Let me know please. Time is running out
You shouldn't even consider this car without a full pre-purchase inspection from an experienced Corvette mechanic. If the mechanic doing the inspection is any good, they should be able to tell you if the car won't pass emissions (as well as any other issues that you may not currently know about). If the seller won't agree to this, run away fast.
Are the front O2 sensors on the car to be turned on again? I have headers, front O2 sensors and high flow cats, the car passes NYS inspections as long as the check engine light is off and the GM learn procedure was run two or three times. If the codes were cleared, the GM learn procedure needs to be run even though the check engine light is off. Disconnecting the battery might also require the learn procedure to be run. try running the learn procedure on a cold engine to see if anything improves.
my car passed in NY with headers, z06 cat back, supercharger and cam, and high flow cats.
Before I moved to CT, I'd run the car easy for a good five minutes, then drive it around town driving nice and easy for a good 15 minutes, and it passed with no issue.

Usually if a battery is disconnected a car needs to be driven about 30 miles before sensors are ready again. If he cleared the codes and disconnected the battery it will make all those sensors not ready.
Ask him to take it for an extended test drive and to have a mechanic check if it can pass emissions before you buy it. Don't let excitement and emotions get you to pull the trigger on a car that could be a nightmare to register.

I'm a a NYS Inspector. Take it from me, If the seller cant provide proof that ALL monitors are ready with no check engine light on, walk away. There are lots of C5's out there to buy that are good ones.
Thanks guys. From some of the reading I was doing, the vette doctors in NY near me could have helped me. Unfortunately the car was sold yesterday. So pissed. Maybe it was for the better after all. 16k he agreed for this bad boy with fresh brakes and exhaust mod included 😢 😭 😢 so mad.. back to looking at z06s over $20k.

sorry to hear about that, but keep your head up and keep searching! In November I bought a 2002 C5 Z06 with 103,000 and full headers, cam, long tubes, etc. With 460whp for $15k.
I was searching for 2 months before i found the car i wanted at the price I wanted. Be patient and you'll find an even better deal than this car!

Wow that's pretty amazing. I guess the deals really are out there. Usually it's the guys that just want to get rid of it quickly right?

the guy I bought it from was looking to sell it to put a down payment on a house. The really great deals are rare but out there. Increasing your search radius can help a lot of you're willing to travel to get the car too. I went from Texas to Arizona to get my car. I was patient and eventually that car popped up and I jumped on it as fast as I could.
Remember, eveyone wants a corvette but no own needs a corvette. The cars are usually someone's second car or a nice daily driver, but people often find themselves in a situation where they need money over the car. That's a good time for a good deal to pop up. The longer you look the more likely you are to find that deal and recognize it when you see it.

😄 you said it perfectly.. did you fly out to get it or drove? See I wanted one 4 hours away, but no one will drive that far with me to drive my daily car back. Really don't feel like flying only to see the car is not what I thought it was.
Most of the cars im looking to buy have no cats.. I'm still fairly new to these cars. Is it a big job to install cats or it can be done fairly easily underneath by a shop without touching the headers? Because on my bmw for example, it's a pain to change the cats since they are built into the headers and you have to remove them all as one piece.
Some header companies offer a bolt on high flow cat/x pipe option for their headers that replaces the factory cat/H pipe assembly; the headers don't need to be removed, just the cat/H pipe.
When you say Vette Drs could have helped you what does that mean ? I have an 07 Z06 ,Texas car, no cats and it failed inspection...I cleared the check engine light before I got it done but it came back not ready...Seems the front sensors are not getting hot enough since the car is catless...
Just wondering if Vette Drs has a few tricks to get it to pass...Looks like I will be registering this car at my Florida address...Don’t really want to do that...Funny thing is it’s more money to insure my corvette in Florida with classic Ins than it is in NY....
You can get valid inspection stickers all over the internet but when it comes to re registering the car you can’t because it shows car was never inspected...
I had a pretty horrible experience with Vette Drs. I wouldn't trust them to handle that ... and besides, any decent mechanic will take your car out with an OBD and make sure it'll pass before they hook it up.
Like I said, I ran headers + cat back + hi flow cats for years in ny without any issues passing. if that car is throwing codes or not passing, there's something else going on.
