Default Wheel Locks. Check your nuts.

Go check you're nuts.

Anyone running wheel locks on the C5. I got a set of McGards and both rear nuts broke and came loose. Walked out in the garage today and notice it. Looks like maybe the wheels studs are too long for the lug nuts and it cracked the tops off.

McGards website says these are the correct nuts for the C5. My guess is previous owner changed the wheel studs along with the wheels.

Is this really how things go on this forum. I guess there are people everywhere that feel the need to point out others flaws to make themselves feel better.

Looking for help and advice and this is what I get. Nice way to be welcomed.

Shoot, what size or type of McGards did you get? Did you get the Splinedrives? I just ordered a set of Splinedrives with no locks, but I have aftermarket wheels and the PO's lug nut of choice are rusting and look awful. I don't think you can use 'tuner' nut style on OEM wheels due to the way they seat...but maybe someone can correct me though. Are those C6 wheels or Aftermarket?

Totally agree!!! This is not English class. Even if it was, with as many mistakes as my "smart" phone makes by changing what I actually typed, what is typed isn't always what is posted! I'll be damned if I'm gonna (yup-GONNA!!) hire a proof reader. People come here for help, or offer help. Most don't come looking for a refresher course in High School English. Sad.......

Thanks for posting. Looking at the lug nuts is a thing most of us do not check. Guess I'll go check mine.

Speaking from experience of working at a dealership and seeing this time and time again....

Wheel locks are a waste of time and money, in my opinion. Any thief who wants your wheels is just going to break them off with an impact gun anyway, and these days, cordless impacts can put out 600+ ft-lbs. of breakaway torque. They are leaving whether you want them to or not.

The only person a wheel lock inconveniences is the regular owner of the car when they can't get their wheel off when they need it most.

Me, hiding my shame, when the shop had to call me and ask where the 'key' was and me telling them "it's at the bottom of the blue bin in the boot....I think"
Luckily it was. I did get the wheel locks right after the apartment complex sent out a notice that someone had a wheel stolen (although I think it was a personal dispute or prank or something because it was stolen off an unremarkable ES300)

The biggest wheel theft target right now is high trim Honda and Toyota models. The wheels are backwards compatible with most of the older cars so thieves can sell them quickly and for a good amount of money. My buddy had the wheels stolen off his Civic with OEM wheel locks - so he bagged it and now it's too aired out to get a jack under.

Welcome to the forum, BeanSoup. Hope I spelled it correctly, 😂🤣. Also hope the one word spelling/format is correct. Imagine Earnhardt pulling into the pits, hollering "I aint got no brakes, guys!!" Then the pit crew drops their tools, grab their smart phones, and start looking up the proper terminology on Wikipedia!!!! ROFLMFAO!!!!Some here must have a mighty boring life......

As for your question, I haven't run McGard locks, so I can't speak with any experience on your problem. IDK who makes the factory locks, but I **** canned mine, because 2 of the outer edges cracked, making the 'key' useless, and I had one Helluva (sorry for the non existent english word!) time getting them off. Once I finally did, all 4 and the key went in the can. Many opinions on both sides, for, or against, using locks. I'll never run them again. I can offer a suggestion. When you get a wheel off, if you have any lock left that hasn't broken, clean the threads on the wheel stud, and inside the lock, with brake cleaner, and blow dry with compressed air. Then thread it on the stud as far as you can by hand. Take a white soapstone, or crayon, and mark the thread as close to the lock as possible. Mount the wheel, and use 2 regular nuts on 2 other studs. Now thread the lock onto the marked stud by hand, and check closely just how far it goes on. That, or put a white stripe the entire length of the stud, and see how much of the white stripe wears off. Best of luck, and hope this helps......

One of the first things I checked on my C5. I had one with the locking nuts but it came with the special socket for it and my new one does not have a special nut

I will be buying new lug nut covers anyways. They are cheap on amazon the the black ones look way better than the gray.

I have Gorilla locks on my ZL1. Funny story, we had a Camaro show onetime and many had the Gorilla locks. We all tried our locks on other cars and found there were really only about 4 keys. So, I agree, they are useless even if the thieves don't break them off.

Had the OEM locks on my C5 when I bought it. Have run multiple sets of McGard locknuts on multiple cars - one set aftermarket and others OEM. Never had a problem with any of them. Those pics look like the result of someone tightening the lock nut with an air impact wrench and not bothering with anything wimpy like a torque wrench.

This is why I run Gorillas.

It keeps the honest people honest and if I don't have a key handy you can take them right off with a 6 point socket and not hurt them.

warning: there's a lot of wise asses on CF. mostly in off topic subformum but some wiseassery everywhere. It's all in fun

those are c7 wheels? might the wheels themselves be 'thinner' ie expose more of the stud? just a thought.

I don't run wheel locks either. They cause more problems than they solve.

The issue with the pictured wheel locks is that the WHEELS may not have as thick of a mounting pad as the OEM wheels, and allowed the lug nuts to cinch further down onto the stud, blowing out the cap.
