11/08/2008 was when I bought and installed a nice new Sears Diehard Platinum - aka Odyssey Extreme. Cost then $201.99 including tax. Today, it died - 10 volt maximum being produced and no ability to charge at a normal rate, so I guess it lost a cell. Not bad after 13+ years, though I sort of hoped it might make it until this November. So I looked around and found that Walmart has no 78 batteries - I'm a fan of their Maxx batteries - and other outlets who had them wanted well north of $200 for them - if they had them at all. Decided to go for the gold and ordered a new Odyssey - $330 from Amazon. At least I know I won't have to worry about it for many years to come. Price increase more than inflation (should be about 30%), but that's OK.
WOW! 13 years is pretty darn good. I'm guessing that you had it on a battery tender. If not, that's astounding. Unfortunately, batteries have gotten more expensive, and tend to not last as long as they used to. I wish you the best of luck with the new one.

No battery tender, but a history of all year use - except for snow.
As to the comment above about not lasting a year - when you have a 4 year full replacement warranty, which they had, plus a further 4 years pro-rated, that's not much of a problem. The sad thing was that Sears had to drop the Enersys made Platinums because too many got used for trolling motors (because of the apparently too good to be true warranty) and did not last the full 4 years, so making them unprofitable. Platinum now is just another Diehard label.
