I finally got around to pulling this part off to see what its purpose is and if I am correct, I am surprised that it was located where it was. First, pulling off the part and opening it up didn't reveal much as to the manufacturer so I started pulling off all the number sequences from the electrical parts and looking them up. There were several sequences that turned up nothing including the PCB part number. Only 1 part number sequence gave me a clue as what this part was. I ran the number SC2272-M4 from the IC and it came up as a 4 channel RF remote control decoder receiver. Then I tried my FOB to unlock the doors and no joy. Based on this information my guess is that it was in fact the RC receiver for the vehicle. The reason I said that I was surprised after this finding is because I always thought that the receiver was located on the drivers side rear hatch above the RL tire.

So, my question is this. Seeing that is could be the RC receiver then I should be able to upgrade the key fob with a newer version where the keys are lowere in cost and easier to find. My fob is GM10253839 with the passive switch. I understand that the newer version fobs cost less and may not have the passive switch and are plentiful on the market.

Comments anyone? Thanks in advance and cheers!!
What kind of key fobs do you have? Are they factory GM? If not I think you found your answer.

Yes, they are factory GM. Another forum member suggested that it may have been associated with an alarm starter or remote starter gizmo. Since I have removed the item and all systems check out ok, I am going to rest on that answer. Thanks again to all. Cheers!!!
