I was giving her a good bath and noticed this part by the fuse box under the hood. I have no idea why I hadn't noticed it before but I did this time and I wonder what it might be. The red wire and the single black wire go to different ground spots. The sticker has #919795 but I searched for that number and nothing came up. So my question is, does anyone know what part this is? I would like to pry it open because it appears to be glued on and not fastened on but I would like to know what I may be getting into. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and Cheers!!!
Based on the connections you've photographed for us, I would guess it's an on-board battery trickle charger.
There's another wire harness that runs out of our view, looks like it snakes toward the headlight. If you can trace that wire harness, it may give more clues (i.e. if it hooks up elsewhere or has a certain plug on the end).
So now that that's done, I am even more confused because to me it seems to be a non-operating/functioning item. Pic 1 show one black wire disconnected, and the red wire grounded. Pic 2 shows the second black grounded as well. There are 2 black wires going through a loom and they terminate to a ground point as shown in Pic 3. In Pic 4 you can see the loom snaking down to another termination point which is also a grounding point. I pulled up those 2 black wires and they are cut!! So, I am lost as to what this part may be since it seems to be grounded in 4 points. I guess I just have to open it up to get a definitive part number or its function unless someone here knows what this part is.
Can't speculate on the thing a ma bob you have there...
You really should cover that + Positive terminal on the battery. If that goes to a - Negative ground you have now made a DC welder. I knew a guy with a screw driver as a young man... Connected the circuit. Lesson learned. Bright light and white hot metal. I'm forever scared to see an open + terminal. Tape will even work as a temporary insulator/fix.
Thanks to all. I was thinking of pulling that thing out after it looked like nothing to me as I stated before. I just wanted to check in on the forum in case someone had any idea what it is for. When I get it pulled out later this morning, I will let Ya'll know what it was. Thanks again.
@Prop Joe Ya that battery is brand new as I just dropped her in yesterday. My thought was to change out the side mounts to top mounts for convenience but had to respond to an emergency so I forgot to put the covers back on. Thanks for the reminder as the covers are going back on this morning when I pull this thing out.
@oharal My thoughts exactly right? Aluminum doesn't rust afaik because there is no iron but it does corrode/oxidate. But the oxidation process is supposed to protect the alum from further oxidation as far as I can remember my HS science classes. And since the remainder of the vehicle is made from milk cartons, I am totally at a loss why a PO would have that gizmo installed. I won't know for sure until I rip it out. @Prop Joe Covered up the terminals with the original caps so all is good.
Good Day Jack....Correct on that idea as I too thought that might be what it was but again, I won't know until I pull that out and check it out completely.
I finally got around to pulling this part off to see what its purpose is and if I am correct, I am surprised that it was located where it was. First, pulling off the part and opening it up didn't reveal much as to the manufacturer so I started pulling off all the number sequences from the electrical parts and looking them up. There were several sequences that turned up nothing including the PCB part number. Only 1 part number sequence gave me a clue as what this part was. I ran the number SC2272-M4 from the IC and it came up as a 4 channel RF remote control decoder receiver. Then I tried my FOB to unlock the doors and no joy. Based on this information my guess is that it was in fact the RC receiver for the vehicle. The reason I said that I was surprised after this finding is because I always thought that the receiver was located on the drivers side rear hatch above the RL tire.
So, my question is this. Seeing that is could be the RC receiver then I should be able to upgrade the key fob with a newer version where the keys are lowere in cost and easier to find. My fob is GM10253839 with the passive switch. I understand that the newer version fobs cost less and may not have the passive switch and are plentiful on the market.
That box is definitely not original equipment. All C5's have the TPMS and key fob remote receiver installed in the cargo hatch behind the trunk liner above the drivers side rear tire. The same area where the gas door emergency release cable is located. If its not a rust prevention device it could possibly be part of a aftermarket remote starter or alarm system.
