Default I’ve been falling off lately

With my current job I get so greasy and nasty at work that I don’t like taking the corvette in because I feel bad driving home covered in grease, sweat, and blood. I’ve owned this car for going on 9 years, and for half of them it was my only car. I took it out today to meet my dad for Father’s Day, and realized that in the first 6 years I owned it I put 50k miles on it, but in the last 3.5 I’ve only put about 13k on it.

It’s really sad because I used to come to this forum every day in my free time, but not driving it due to this job has me no longer checking in. It’s still the last car that I would sell out of our fleet of 6, because I would rather a greasy seat in a Z06 than no Z06 at all, but today made me really realize that I need to get serious about finding a better career path.

it also made me realize that it’s time to put some love into the car. Since 2014 when I put headers, Intake, exhaust, and a shifter it’s gotten nothing but oil changes and maintenance. It’s due up for brakes and I figure I’ll refresh the suspension some.

Hopefully I can figure out a career path soon that lets me drive it more, But until then I’ll really just have to be more diligent about taking it out on weekend trips the the store and such.

Until then, I’m gonna start saving my pennies for a brake and suspension refresh, and start checking back in here regularly again

Keeping it under a bridge probably doesn't help. Jk, of course. Nice ride. Even nicer you're thinking about your life's plans. We all need a plan. Nice ride.

To be honest my dude, if you're proud of the work you do, can even find a small amount of joy or satisfaction in it, and it provides for your family, I wouldn't worry much beyond that. You're not defined by your job or your income.
Be proud of what you have accomplished and the fruits you have to show for it, but never prideful. Tomorrow it might be gone. What's left then? I'd argue quite a bit, but that's a tad philosophical for the forums eh?

Beyond that, you could always get seat covers, a replacement shift ****, and a spare steering wheel. Maybe keep some wet wipes in the center console?

Lol... not even joking though.
Life is too short. Drive the car!

Good luck in your job search.

I've also noticed that I am puttting very few miles on it. I've owned my 01 for 8 years as well. Nice speedway white by the way. I bought mine with 31k and drove it all over the place road trips etc. it was mostly a second/ third car. Now, 2 kids under 2. And work from home. I have to force myself to take it out and it's usually just to wash it because it gets dusty sitting in the garage. It's not going anywhere though. I'll drive it more just not right now. A back seat would be nice

In my job I get sweaty and dirty on a regular basis. While I am issued a vehicle by my employer (after hours call out reasons), I just keep a change of clothes in my truck. Only takes me a few minutes to toss my ditty’s in a box and slip on my old jeans and tee shirt. You would need a log sleeve tee shirt to cover the grease on your elbows. When you get home, toss those car-clothes back in the car for next time.

As far your hands, keep a pair of those cheap thin gardening gloves in the center console to drive home.

Treat yourself once a week to drive the Vette and just do the clothing change.

Keep the Vette.

I agree with you there, but I dislike the work (fixing truck mount carpet cleaners) and the people I work with. I took the job to help out the people in that shop, but they turned out to be very different people than I thought they were. I’ll figure something out though soon, hopefully

that’s actually a bridge for a karting race track in an abandoned little amusement park. Couldn’t resist the pic since they didn’t have it blocked off and there weren’t any “no trespassing” signs on it

that’s funny, what machine are you running? That’s not a job I would want to have either, but there can be a lot of money in it for sure

Currently we have a hydromaster system. Think it's a 4.8 cds. It's supposed to be top of the line but honestly, at my old business we had a little Kohler command motor that powered the system via kerosine, and a cheap heater motor I can't remember the name of, and it was a much better system in my experience.

It's not all bad, I've got a great group of guys and we have fun. Also do lots of stripping and refinishing of VCT floors, diamond grinding of stone/terrazzo type floors, acid washing ceramic tile and grout, etc etc and odd Jobs in between.

I don't make a lot of money, but I'm pretty good at living within my means and enjoying life.

God, family, true friends, and then yourself in that order. I don't always get it right. That's why I have a corvette. Lol! But I try.

Hang in there man‐ it's all part of the journey.

A 4.8 CDS was the first machine I ever worked on, definitely a good machine.

I actually left my last job because I could only go to church maybe once a month, and even then I would come out of the service and have a dozen messages and missed calls from work. Now at this job my coworkers look at me like I’m crazy because I bring in a Bible to read, voluntarily wear ear protection, and put on sunscreen.

hopefully I didn’t come off like I was just looking for pity, I’ll just be happy to be able to enjoy my car like I used to, and have a job/coworkers that I enjoy.

Good luck. God has a funny way of putting us where we need to be. Although it isn't always easy to see that at the time. Good luck finding a new job.

^^ Amen brother. The hard times make us strong, if we're willing to accept it and move through it.

At least we all got some sweet rides to help us move a little faster at times

Here’s a thought - how about getting some decent seat covers to help protect the leather. Gives you no reason not to get back to driving the car more.

You know, if you like working with your hands and especially if you like working on your car, there is a very good living to made in the automotive repair industry. It does require a bit of investment (tools and training) and a whole lot of commitment, however it can be very rewarding. Mt older brother has made a nice career for himself, put three kids through college, and has every Sunday off his entire life.

Until you figure out what you really want to do and commit to, treat this job as if this were the one. Approach it as a service to those folks that depend on those machines to feed their families, and do your best. Don't worry about what people around you think. Keep your Faith, and take of your business. Keep your head down, your nose clean, and your hands moving, and God will take care of the rest.

Oh, and just get a cheap seat cover and steering wheel cover for when you want to drive the car to work.

Check this out! Tyvek suits work great to keep you from taking that grime home with you. Or just use the Tyvek to drive home in. Warning they are hot to wear.
