Hey y’all, I’ve been looking at a ‘97 Vette and it looks nice and all, but it doesn’t have the stock steering wheel. It’s got a racing one, without an airbag. Since I rather enjoy being alive, I’d want to replace it with one that does have an airbag. Anyone know what the costs are for replacement and installation?

I have a Redline D wheel with the bag. I think it cost
around $750.

You can find stock steering wheels for a very reasonable price in the C5 Parts for Sale section as well as on the big auction site. Cost for the air bag of course is extra and installation cost can vary depending on local labor rates.
On ebay there is a steering wheel airbag with clock spring, Airbag Module Set and side air bag for 299 or best offer.
The steering wheels are around 150ish on the ebay.
You may not need the airbag module or passenger side air bag, you may want to check to see if they were removed.
Is there any data out there on how often a 25 year old airbag system actually works correctly?
In the early days of airbags, it was recommended that they be replaced or inspected (whatever that entails) every 10 years. What's the deal now -- are they just good forever?
Welcome to the forum! You have several options here. Getting a used OEM bag and wheel will certainly be the cheapest option. There are also several aftermarket options that still retain the use of the stock airbag. That would cost more (and you would still need to find an airbag). However, it would be a nice upgrade without sacrificing safety. The other option would be to switch to a C6 steering wheel. If you do a search, there a few threads on how to do this. If you decide on this option, you would use a C6 airbag instead on the C5. The C6 wheel is smaller (which a lot of people prefer). The C6 wheel also has some control buttons that can be made functional for an additional cost. Good luck!
