Rather than replace it, I did the "Pink wire mod". Now it is permanently in the down position. However, it still functions as an antennae every bit as well as it used to. Since the body panels aren't metal, they don't block the radio signal. The end result is that I still get good radio signal with a super low profile antennae. Best of all, it was totally free, and I can easily reverse it if I ever change my mind.
I have not replaced with a shorty but here is what I did to eliminate the antenna going up each time I played a CD. Others have just disconnected the electric feed (behind trunk fender cover, passenger side) to the antenna and still receive radio stations if you are not in a very rural area.

Not trying to hijack someone's thread but I was wondering what the best solution for the power antenna was if someone installed a aftermarket receiver. I would want the antenna down when using bluetooth or cd/dvd but up when radio is used. Going to keep this idea in mind.

How do you disconnect the electric feed? Thanks for you help!
When you pull back the inside trunk covering on the passenger side near the antenna, you will see a plastic wire clip that feeds the antenna. Just separate and it stops power to the antenna.

That makes the antennae no longer function as an antennae. The pink wire mod allows the antenna to still function to receive radio signal, but it keeps the antennae from going up.
