The windshield on my 2002 has a few nicks in it. I took it to Safelite and they wanted to replace it.
I got on the books, but today they called and said it uses discontinued parts. If they reused the parts, I might have wind noise or leaks so they don't want to. They cancelled the appointment.
I was told to search online for Corvette glass, but I'm not finding much.
Does anyone know a place around Eden Prairie Minnesota that could help me?
I had several small windshield chips/nicks and called a local independant professional windshield repair outfit who came to our home. They repaired the chips, focusing on those that were deep and capable of spreading...in such a way that all are now all but invisible. You can also buy chip repair kits on line for do-it-yourself. I was most concerned about those, when looking through a magnifying glass, showed small spreading cracks. Get it done before heat/cold spreads those chips that are capable of more damage. Not cheap but better than the alternative. Good luck!
I called another glass company and they said the same thing. The windshield is available but there's a molding that is not.
I called a dealership and they said no dealer in the country has stock.
They said trying to fix the dings isn't a good idea. You can feel them with your fingernail, and they said filling them won't provide a very good result.
I was told I could maybe contact Corvette shops around.
Unfortunately, this is a known issue. The molding that is used has been discontinued for some time. I know that Corvette Rubber was trying to make an aftermarket replacement option. I think they were close, but I'm not sure when they plan to actually start selling it. It is possible to reuse the original molding, but the tech would have to be VERY careful removing it. If you don't have any major cracks or chips, I would consider the repair option. If you can wait, Corvette Rubber should have theirs for sale soon.
Safelite was not willing to use the same molding. They said if they did that, I could get an air leak at speed or even a water leak.
The nicks are only on the passenger side, so it's not life threatening. I just thought getting new glass (with our $0 deductible) sounded good.
Thanks again.
Interesting, Safelite replaced my windshield last year and reused the molding. They must have had a policy change. Oh by the way, no problems with leaks or wind noise.
I found a shop willing to use the existing molding. They're transferring my Geico claim tomorrow and ordering a windshield for a head-up-display. Weeks out, but hopeful. Thanks again for the input.
It’s doable, however, you must use caution when removing and reinstalling the molding. When pulling it’ll likely be “rippled” as shown below though a couple days in the sun will flatten it out no problem.
I have the same issue here in Michigan. Insurance issued a check for replacement and now no one can get a windshield for my 02 Vert with HUD display. There must be some place who has some. I did find after market ones on Corvette Central but not with HUD. Thanks Bob

My best guess is Safelite is like many large Corporations, and has locally owned franchisee's. Probably depends on the local franchisee on whether they'll do it, or not. Like it, or not, franchisee quality varies, even though the name is the same.......

I'm in Michigan, also. I have Farm Bureau insurance. IDK whats going on. I can't even find a non-HUD. Companies I've called say they can get either one. I was at the last company while he talked to a supplier. The supplier said he had both in stock, and could ship them within 3-5 business days. A month later......Nothing. The guy I was with when he called the supplier is tired of my weekly calls, and told me last week that he'd call me when it finally comes in. He's upset with the supplier, too. He told me they're apparently lying to him about delivery times, and it makes his company look bad when he repeats what the supplier tells him, then can't deliver. If he tells the customer the truth, that he doesn't know when he can get them, they go somewhere else. I've lost respect for all the companies now who advertise "in stock" on their websites, because many times that is false. What the Hell is going on in this world anymore??!
I usually ignore chips on any of my cars, since it does happen. Not sure if it would affect the Vettes as much, but in my Pickup truck the windshield has that "sound proofing" material so not as loud inside. I wonder if you got it replaced by safelite if that would retain, doubtful.
Has not anyone any questions for the maker of this car for a safety "critical component" (that's CRITICAL to operation) not being available to more than 200,000 customers of their product? What kind of company dose that to loyal customers?... Let's have an answer GM. Or are you chicken?
Got the windshield replaced for the third time and the installer seemed really happy this time. It's been a battle, but hopefully good now! Thanks for the help.

When did windshield molding become a safety critical component?
