Default Run flats slippery

I've just had my 2002 Coupe a week but felt a physical slide left at slow speed right turn and yesterday following a right turn I hit the gas about half way and felt another slide 4 wheel. I instantly let off gas and it grabbed full traction immediately. This second event the roadway may have been damp at that particular spot. It had rained earlier. I've never felt this through 3 other C5's and 1 C4. This is the first set of run flats I've had since my original C4. Are these run flats typically slippery?
Thank you
Mark

Yup, the OEM GY tires are very slippery. I switched to Hankook V12's and it was like a different car. It's actually a challenge to break them loose with a stock M6 car.

The GY's in my experience got slippery with age. Currently running Michelin A/S RF's and they have stayed very grippy.

They do tend to slip more than non-runflats. This is especially true if they are old. Sounds like it's time to go get a quality set of non-runflat tires. You'll be very glad you did.

I agree I just don't have S2,000.00 laying around. Especially after just buying the car. But I appreciate your comments.

I would agree that if the tires are old, they can get very slippery. New runflats should have plenty of traction - I know my Michelin A/S 3+ ZP tires do well on my C7.

And it should not cost you $2K for a set of tires. My Michelins cost right at $1250 for the set of four.

Thank you. Are your Michelins run flat? I was pricing replacing the Goidyear Eagke F1 GS Run flats on it. Each is over $500 in my area and very hard to find. How can I tell the age of my tires from markings on the tires.

Tirerack is advertising A/S 3 ZP's (run flats) for $1117 for the set.

You can get a good set of tires for around $1K. In addition to having better traction, and less road noise. A good set of non-run flats are also cheaper. I'm not sure what your primary use is for the car, but you can get a good set of tires for around $1K. If the car is a weekend toy/nice weather driver. I would seriously consider max performance Summer tires. If it is a year round daily driver, a good set of all-season tires would be the way to go. Either way, ditch the run flats. What is the date code on your current tires? They should be replaced every 6 years regardless of wear. If your tires are 10+ years old, they are just plain unsafe to drive on at all. On Tire Rack they have Continental ExtremeContact Sport summer tires at $218.99 per front tire, and $309.99 per rear tire. You can get Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus Ultra high performance all season tires for $193.99 per front tire, and $282.99 per back tire. Shipping is free. The tires are the only part of the car that touches the road. More than any other part of the car, you need to make sure your tires are in good shape. Good luck!

My front tires the worst, were made in 2014. Rear tires were made in 2016. I haven't decided how I'm going to use it yet. Either way I won't be driving it much. If I get non runflats I could use a can of fix a flat if needed, correct? I'll take your advice to heart. Thank you.

The GR run flats are terrible. I also run the Michelin ZP +3, they are a very good set of tires. I have had my car 24 years on run flats. Everyone has an opinion. I don’t care what tire you buy. Buy what works for you. The Michelin right now has the best run flat on the market. Yes they are harder and louder than a conventional tire. If I want a quite soft ride I’ll drive the Buick.

I got tired of buying expensive run flats, 3rd time buying tires for my C5 bought regular non run flat tires.

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500, with a instant rebate, and getting a prepaid debit card for opening a Firestone credit card at Firestone shop, it was super cheap, basically $400.00 for 4 new tires including mounting and balance, don’t think there will be a deal that great ever again, that was June 2019.

Best traction I’ve ever had, tires are made in Indonesia, Indonesia=Indy 500.

Maybe call and get a price, saw they have $110.00 off 4 Firestone tires until September 15th.

I have a air pump in car and was going to buy tire repair kit in case flat if taking road trip.

You can get a scissor jack off PT Cruiser in salvage yard cheap, payed about 5 bucks plus tax, the handle has the same lug size as lug nuts on my 1999, this way if you needed to Jack up car to get to a nail or whatever to fix if stranded.

The PT Cruiser scissor jack and handle can fit in the middle cubby hole, although I just have it in garage, would put in on a long road trip.

GET UP TO $110 BACK

by mail on a Firestone VISA® Prepaid Card.
Get up to $80 with purchase of 4 eligible tires + $30 when you use your CFNA Credit Card.

Says Firehawk tires are included, maybe call a Firestone place tomorrow to get a price, then $110.00 back on prepaid card after you fill it out.

Glad to hear that you are looking into new tires. Your front tires are definitely at the point of not being safe anymore. Yes you can use fix a flat. I carry a small air compressor that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I've gotten several nails and screws in my tires over the years. Never once has it left me stranded. A new set of tires is going to make your C5 feel like a whole new car!
