The HUD was installed by a previous owner. It definitely did not come from the factory that way.

Yes, the HUD became available in the 1999 model year - I ordered my '99 with the HUD.
If your '97 had a HUD, it was installed after the car was built.

I second the thought that the mileage may not be correct because in 1997 the cluster was not HUD compatible.
So the cluster was also changed when the HUD was added.
I do remember however that back in the day there was a vendor in SC that not only sold you a HUD cluster with the kit , but programmed your mileage into it as well before he shipped it.
Most people find a cluster with mileage that is somewhat close to what they have and roll with it though.

I pulled my dash to find my early run 99 wasn't wired for HUD. Thought about getting the right cluster, decided it was a cluster**** and put it all back together and sold the HUD. Lot of moola for a gadget (which I really want).
