I desperately need to do this to my black C5 but it's always been low on the priority list.

They always look better than any other color when clean and shiny!

You are correct, it took the microscopic contaniments of the finish that makes for a smooth surface to apply whatever shine product you want to use.
In this case, it was clayed with detail shine and then another detail shine coat on that. Glad you like it.
