The other day in history class a few other guys and I were discussing some of the new concept cars that were unvieled at the Dietrot and LA shows. And this kid gets in an argument with me trying to say that his 325 can out handle a ZO6 and that an M3 would blow the doors off of any Corvette. I dropped my jaw. And went off on this kid. Know I don't know the real stats of a Z06. I have read plenty of posts and know the RWHP and stuff like that. But what I want to know is what is the suspension differences and overall quaility of the parts.
A Z06 will out handle and over power a M3. The M3 is a great car but its performance pales in comparision to the Z06. I raced a M3 and won easily. The M3 puts out 333hp the Z06 is at 405hp. In respect to performance the M3 and the Z06 are in two different leagues.
well Road and Track or Car and Driver did this comaprison when M3 came out. All the drivers said that they would buy M3 because of its over all Quality and ride conmfort but they said if you are a Number person then go for Z becasue Z out performed M3 in every category of performance.
I got a Z and i would love to get a M3 if i get a real good deal on it but it will have to be a real good deal because i am not gonna part from my Z that easy.
I don't know what you are talking about Quin! The forum rules don't allow us to brag about street racing anymore. Since this rule passed I have never street raced and bragged about it! :seeya
I traded my 01 m3 for an 02 Z and both a great cars. The M3 is a much more solid car then the Z and its built quality makes the Z look extremely bad. I drove the car for a year and never saw BMW’s service department besides for oil changes, the Z on the other end, made me develop a very close relationship with my local GM service manager. The M is a very fast car that allows you to drive it to the limit without making you work that hard.
Now I know that most of you will say that the Z will smoke the M3 in any possible way and you are 100% right but I found in the Z something that the M will never ever have, Character. The Z makes you work and work hard if you really want to drive it and I love it for that, sometimes I feel as is I drive a go-cart on steroids.
BMW certainly makes very solid cars...no doubt....I have alot of friends with C5's and not one of them has had problems with them in the 3 years I've known them.....it's a well built car as well.....where else can you get $100,000 supercar performance for $50,000?......yeh, the interior is not top notch...but I don't care...:D
Let us put it another way at 330hp/3400#'s vs 385hp/3115, the M-3 would have to drop app 725#s of body weight just to match the Zo6 P/W ratio or have an engine with 420 hp. with the same weight. I also read that the M-3 has a 4.11 rear end to a z06 rear end of 3.42.
Lot of interesting posts. All I can say is that I used to drive an M3 and you can see that I now have a 2002 Z06. Admitedly the quality of the build on the M3 is better but does not compare when it comes to power, handling and character. I drove BMWs for 10 years but as you can see from my username when it came time for a Z06 I w8d4it.
The other thing to consider is the M3's engine troubles. I had a 2001 M3, but traded it for a 2003 Z06.
The M3 was experiencing an unusually high number of engine failures. They haven't really nailed down the reason behind these failures, but they kept happening nonetheless. In fact, it got so bad that BMWNA recently sent out a letter that lets M3 owners know that their engine warranty has been extended 2 years and to a total of 100,000 miles. But the letter is worded in such a way that BMW doesn't really take responsiblity for the problem. And they haven't actually FIXED the problem either. Looking back, I miss the M3, but I'm VERY glad that I made the decision I did. And like someone else said: you can't match the CHARACTER that you find in the Z06.
For the record: my Seat-o-the-pants Dyno says the Z06 would have smoked my M3. :)
I drove an M3, a Z06 and several slightly used Vipers before deciding to purchase my Z06 in Jan. '02. The M3 is a luxury car (assuming you get all the options...and frankly, I was surprised that the option list was SO long on a $45k car...in reality it would have been more like $56k out the door with the options I wanted). It is very fast for what it is and handles great. I liked it.
However, low-13s in the 1/4 does not thrill me enough to buy something like that. In fact, I have a truck that will do that (and more now, just haven't had it to the track). There are several M3 owners who now know what a big white truck with boost will do...show them its taillights, and very easily, I might add.
If you need a backseat and need a fast car, the M3 is super. It would be tough to find something else in its class, although my brother's S4 with a mild PCM upgrade to bump boost will outrun one (and the interior of the Audi is better than the BMW). That's the other problem...if you want to go faster in an M3, you're gonna pay for it big time. If you think mods for a C5 Vette are high, go price a simple muffler swap on an M3 or M5. Sheesh. Airbox? $500-700, I believe.
Then we get into the issues IronNipplez talked about. I know a local BMW service tech. He says there are many M3s that come back with nuked motors. These are no more reliable cars than the Z06. Sorry. They may use nicer materials to build the interior of the car, and overall fit and finish is better, but I'm not sure reliability is any better. Now if we're talking about a 5-series car (which is BMW's bread and butter), then its another ballgame.
