OP - excellent post about being very careful when it comes to scammers. The forum has seen a definite increase in this type of activity and it always pays to carefully consider the tips presented in this thread.
While the forum does not prohibit payments by services like Zelle or Venmo (which offer no buyer protection), I personally will use PayPal since it does offer the protection - if you choose Goods and Services. I will offer to pay the 3% fee if a seller asks for Friends and Family.
Luckily I have not been scammed in my 22 years on the forum but as said by others in this thread, you have to keep your guard up and carefully consider who you are sending your money to. Check the Transactions Feedback section of the forum as another resource for some feedback. And if you suspect a scammer is doing their thing, use the report post button to notify the mods/admins about suspicious activity. While we may not catch every scammer, we do keep busy removing a good number of them.
Finally, each FS section should have Sticky threads (sometimes multiple threads) that warn about scammers, what to look for and what to do if you come across a suspected scammer. Please take time to review the threads before committing your hard earned money to a purchase.
If you have suggestions on improvements to the forum, please send a PM to a member of the administrative team or use the Contact Us feature at the bottom of each forum page. Be specific in what recommendation you have as that will help on determining the feasibility of what is suggested. Forum moderators and administrators can’t possibly read every thread or post that is made so using the above at least brings things to our attention. Besides, the forum rules do specify what to do concerning suggestions for improvements to the forum: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...questions.html
Thanks, Jack! You guys do a good job, this was by no means meant as a complaint about the moderators. Anytime I've reported a scammer, you guys always jump on it quickly. Can't ask much more than that. You guys can't be everywhere at once, so buyers/members need to be extra diligent themselves.

Just to point it out again, post count and years of membership is NOT a sign of safety in itself. Scammers know about this and they hack established member accounts just as much as create new accounts. So just because you're talking to a member that has 5,000 posts and has been on the forum since 2003, it doesn't mean you're not talking to a scammer that's using that account to scam you. I've seen it several times here and I'm pretty sure the scam I mentioned in the first post was another example of that scenario.
FYI guys. Another member here sent me a pm several days ago inquiring about another part I have for sale. He made an offer and I said yes but that was the last I heard. Just got a pm from him claiming he had been sending me texts but got no response and that he has already paid me. I never gave him my address, paypay or any other online payment app. We'll see how this plays out.

I've seen this happen here multiple times as well. If he posted a comment on the FS thread saying he was sending you a PM or asking a question about the part, a scammer most likely saw the interest and PM'd him with a cell phone number requesting to send them a text message. I've had that exact thing happen to me at least twice now.
Guys, PLEASE only send payment through a protected method such as Paypal goods and services. If he did this, he can still get his money back. If not, his money is gone. Whether or not you think something is a scam, the single most important thing to remember out of all of this is ONLY SEND FUNDS WITH BUYER PROTECTION. No Zelle. No Cashapp. No friends and family.

That is exactly what happened. Gave me a phone number to contact him which I will not be doing. When I sent him a PM telling him I was contacting the forum administrators he pm'ed back that he is doing the same and contacting local authorities..........

regrettably, it is not just on this board. It happens on every type of "community" board out there. One thing I have done for the last ~25 years, I use the same handles on ALL BBS. Now that doesn't guarantee anything but you can search across motorcycle boards, car boards and see who I am and how I have been with sales etc. It does suck, but people only scam money from folks who's guard is down and are trusting. That world is long gone I'm afraid- even specific pictures now don't really matter as you can search and find pics of almost anything-
Yellow2007, I bet it was the same scammer that tried to get me a few days ago. He went by "Bucktech". Maybe you ask the person you were selling to if that was the name he sent money to, he did get scammed if so.
