Well I decided to bite the bullet and fix my auto trans leak. Judging from the post comments here, this is somewhat a common accurance when our 'garage queens sit for a while, trans fluid collects and the car will leave a trail when moved. I found a leaky output shaft seal which needs to be replaced. I don't know why
these seals do not have a lip spring to keep a positive contact on the shaft. If you look at most oil seals whether they are for axles, steering, wheel bearings, compressors, etc, most all have lip springs for a tight seal.
I have a LARGE part upgrade for anyone that needs to replace the seals at the back of the trans and the front of the differential. These are the shaft seals. They are both the same. The oem seals (if you can find them) are poor quality and high priced, about 60 bucks each. GM part #24228816 I say they are poor quality because they do not have a spring on the lip like most seals do. National seal #710810 is only about 6 bucks and it does have a lip spring. The numbers do interchange. A lot of work to install a seal that will fail for sure.

Yes, it does seem like the seals on the transmission or differential have a tendency to eventually leak. Looks like you are making good progress so far and best of luck with the rest of the repair.

Thanks for the support!
PS..Got lots of cold beer in the fridge, if you feel ambitious!
Well as they say..I got'er done. Went back together pretty nice. Figered she would get stainless exhaust and brake hoses while it was apart. Painted the rotor hats for a better appearance
. Happy with the results. A lot of work and expense for a dry underneath.
