Default Changing Harmonic Balancer on Quick Jacks

I have a question about changing the harmonic balancer while up on quick jacks. The QJ seem really stable but when you need to torque the HB will it be stable enough? Anyone done the HB change while up on QJ? Thanks for any comments. Bob

I've worked with Quik Jacks and they are rock stable. IMO right up there with a 2-post lift. Certainly better than jack-stands.

Not only have I done it before I've done it three times before.

If you are worried about it lower the car back down so the wheels are touching the ground and then torque from the top.

I prefer to torque from the top anyways so there is more swinging room. I personally skip the torque wrench and just use a 36" breaker bar and pull until I can't pull anymore.

If you manage to knock the car off the quick jacks (assuming it's supported properly) then you've torqued too hard lol.

My crank bolt was a bitch, and sure rattled the car, but the QJ's still would have been fine.

I did it on two walmart 10$ jackstand under the front. Undid the rack, tie rods, abs bracket, block and the rack slide out the passenger side halfway enough to change the balancer, cam swap not too bad maybe 2-4 hours changing a balancer or front seal whatever youre in there doing.

That's all fine and dandy but if they topple over laterally I won't matter.

When I did mine I put my feet up against the wheel and that eliminates the side load on the jack

Just use an air, or strong electric impact to remove. I've used an air impact to R&R my balancer for almost 20 years, off and on 3 or 4 times for different cams. Never came loose. Don't use an impact on the stock bolt for tightening!! Use an impact to tighten only on an ARP bolt. My .02.

That’s interesting; I’ve heard of not using one to tighten but didn’t realise that maybe it was related to the choice of bolt.

Yes, stock bolt is torque to angle, and can't be reused. For all the torquing and angle measuring hassle the stock bolt needs, just get an ARP bolt, and use an impact. I guarantee a shop will use an impact to remove the old stock bolt. If you ever need to 'go back in there,' the ARP will pay for itself the first time this happens. My .02....

I think the QJ should be good for the balancer removal/install. I removed the entire driveline on a set.

I did mine on Quick Jacks, it was no problem at all. Very solid. However, just due to the height, when it came time for torquing the ARP bolt, I set it down to almost touching the floor.
