What caused that?! I also replace my tires every 6 years as recommended by tire rack and the manufacturer. If a tire is in good condition, properly inflated, and not too old, it would take something absolutely crazy to do something like that. Modern tires should never fail that catastrophically.
That was a very OLD tire on my Olds Cutlass that seperated and then came apart but I use it as an illustration. With my Camaro DD I once hit a large hunk of metal on the freeway and it tore a gash in the tread that no kit could possibly save. Luckily I had a factory donut in the trunk to get me home. True, modern tires shouldn't fail but it seems like I'm dodging more garbage in the roadways than ever before.

Do you live in TX? I never dodged so much garbage on the road, highways, and so-called 'maintained' toll roads in my life!! My poor 350z got nails 3 times in 5 yrs, cracked bumper from dodging debris, and a foot long door scratch from a hitch extension that fell off a pick up truck that a car in front of me kicked up in the air. Not to mention the hood got sandblasted from just the perpetual gritty sand on the highways. Glad I left that state.
So I was just wondering ......... would you carry a 17" spare for the front or ....... would you carry an 18" spare for the rear?
I believe that the front calipers on a C-5 are notably larger than the rears, so if a 17" spare wheel would clear the front calipers, it should also clear the rears. What I would be much more concerned with, would be the OD of the spare tire. Cars with limited slip differentials don't like tires that are different ODs on the same axle, You can burn up an LSD really quick, with mis-matched tires.
What do you plan to carry for a jack? Bear in mind where your jack points are, and that after the ‘blow out’ the frame is a couple of inches lower than right now.

If you don't like the idea of an air compressor, tire kit, and AAA, then get yourself some run flats. I personally don't use run flats. However, a run flat is a MUCH better option on a C5 than carrying a spare. Run flats can go 50 miles with a golf ball sized hole in them. Just my $0.02.

I ran non-runflats for a number of years, and carried an air compressor, plug kit and had emergency road service on my car. But having runflats can make a whole lot of sense.
Anyway, the GTO spare mentioned above was popular a few years ago.
If opting for road service, be advised there are a lot of companies besides AAA that offer it. In fact, AAA road service, or lack thereof, in my state of Michigan has deteriorated to the point of wasting money. AAA was, for years, the gold standard of road service. The last 2 or 3 times I needed it, it was terrible. After the last incident, when wife and I waited over 6 hours for a wrecker, I dropped AAA. We were less than 1/2 mile from the AAA garage!!! They work like this: If you become a AAA towing service, AAA pays X amount of $$$ to the garage for towing you. But when you become an accredited AAA garage, AAA figures you'll get more business, based on the AAA name. So, AAA pays the garage LESS $$$ than the garage would get if they simply towed the vehicle with no AAA middle man. So, if it's a busy night for the garage, guess which call the garage prefers taking?

Exactly! I pay a whopping $1.91 a month per car for roadside assistance through my insurance carrier. No brainer. I've used it to have my car towed from home to ECS . I still carry fix a flat, plug kit and a pump in case of emergency.
As mentioned above an unsecured spare behind the driver is nonsensical and dangerous. Also mentioned above...which jack exactly are the spare tire carriers planning to use when their C5 with a flat is an inch off the ground? Talk about insult to injury when you think your covered with a spare but you can't fit your scissor jack under your car.
