Default Lug Nut Question

Were the OEM lug nuts used with the thin spoke or Y2k wheels just a chrome cover over a steel nut?
In putting the rear tires back onto my '04 today, went to tighten one lug and my socket would not go on, so I tapped it on, but then the lug nut would not tighten down, felt like it was stripped. Had to wiggle the socket off and when it came off, a thin metal cover came with it......see picture.

Mine are metal lug nuts with plastic caps that screw on. Not sure if they are factory or not. They look factory.

The steel cap lugs have always been worthless.

Factory huh....figures!
Have ordered a complete set of McGard 64012 as I have two 13/16 or 21mm lugs and all the lug nuts have corrosion on them between the steel nut and chrome cover......the joy of purchasing this '04 from Florida.

Correction: what I have are not factory lug nuts as they are not as shown below from Adwest52. I had that style on my '95, '96 Corvettes as well as my '02 Blazer.
The ones I have are probably made in China.

The lug nuts for the factory thin 5 spoke wheels (Y2K) were steel with a plastic cap that threaded onto it.

Note the replacements for the wheels using the screw on caps do not have that ring to fill in around the lug and into the wheel.

My '98 Dodge Ram 1500 had those same crappy chrome cover lug nuts from the factory as well. I was able to find one piece replacements on E-Bay, they worked perfectly.

Let me educate y'all! 😎... Time goes back to the early fiftys California .. 50's!...Those chrome wheelnut covers,... some of the various first custom and hot roder guys dressed up their rides with what only jc whittney had to offer in their catalog... Every 16 year old "hot roder" wanted chromed wheels!...and you had to have acorn style nut chrome covers on your lug nuts.. those were a must, if not moonies! 😏

For both my ‘00 and ‘03, those lug nuts/covers were on there from the factory. My ‘99 had regular lug nuts as they were hidden behind the center cap.
