Yes you reuse the cover. Absolutely. Unless you want a reeeeally loud interior. If the base of the shifter is too wide then you need to carefully cut it to fit/allow the shifter. Less cutting is more as it will give you a positive seal around that shifter base. If you cut too much you can use your preferred sealant. I have recently used orgavyl which is not perfect because it doesn't like TT tunnel heat, but does seal well to the boot.
Thanks, I heard back from the good folks at Callaway this AM who confirmed the same.
Godspeed, indeed. RIP, Mr. Callaway. If Reeves has anything to do with how fast he can get to Heaven, my $$ would be on him arriving mighty quick!! I'll bet he and John Lingenfelter have already got something going!!
So, what are your impressions of the shifter now that you have it installed?
So far so good! Shifting is very short and notchy; I am a fan but do need more seat time with it. Comparing to my OEM C5 shifter and my friend's MGW, I would say Callaway for the win!
Got the Callaway Shifter installed this evening, does anyone know if this rubber boot/insulator is supposed to be re-installed with the new shifter? The instructions weren't too clear on this. CC: @njpete19@Info@CallawayCars
Is it still possible to purchase a new one of these "boots"? I trimmed mine, minimally, when I installed a Hurst shifter in my C-5, MANY years ago. I did this, just in case I opted to re-install the OE shifter at some time in the future, so the boot would still, more or less work with the OE unit. However, the fit with the Hurst shifter, is less than optimal, and I'd like another unmodified boot, again, "just in case"....

I agree.
Not to sound "tacky", but succumbing to injuries sustained in a fall, is a really unfortunate way to go.
Agreed. But there is almost no graceful way to exit this world. I watched a man pass Thursday morning. Nothing is easy.
Finding a new boot is probably still possible. Just beware that the C6 has two bolts which are different, so chase a C5 specific model. Used off a wreck is fine too if unmodified. And you can add the C6 upper boot and cut to fit as well. More sound deadening.

UPDATE: reinstalled this insulator boot tonight and did not cut it at all, seems to fit fine with no restriction to shifting. Sound/heat is better with this installed, of course.
Witnessed that, in my family. Can't argue with it........
Same, my father-in-law just went about 6 weeks ago. He was on both ends of the discussed spectrums though... his dementia was picking up noticeably, and a persistent foot injury led him to multiple stays in various hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Somewhat because of his dementia he couldn't stop himself from walking on the recovering injury, prolonging the healing process. They eventually had to kinda strap him down to his hospital bed so he couldn't get up. But what really accelerated his downturn was picking up MRSA at one of the skilled nursing places, plus being in that environment for weeks on-end. Really wasn't a great way to go at all. Ironically, by the end his foot was healed.
I'll take the time this weekend to install it and try it out. The square base is offputting to me about getting a positive gasket seal. That can be handled if I kept it. The unit itself needs some break in. It slides in one direction smoothly. In the other direction it breaks faster. I believe the ball it all rides on is simply not fully lubed on all sides. I have the fix for that for sure. It definitely has centering springs. Not weak. Not rock solid. But somewhat strong. And the center shaft setup allows the upper handle to be installed to either side. Wouldn't it be funny if the BPP had the same center distance between bolt holes? I might give this thing a fair shake in my daily for a while. We'll see. I like the BPP and the C7Z it replaced. And the Tmod/Mgw remains my high water mark above all. The Tmod box is refreshed and I'll likely slap it in with this one for now.
High hopes on initial inspection? No.
Possibility to be pleasantly surprised? I hope so, in fact.
Curious that they install travel limiters on the shifter. Smart. But odd. Odd, because if you center the thing the right way you don't need limiters. And if you don't center it but use the limiters to make a false center then it won't go too deep on the gears but it won't feel properly centered when shifting either. A false neutral in my mind. We'll see what it is in practice. If it's righteously awesome, they are low stock on the C5 upper bars. Not that one cannot be made ridiculously easily.
