Hey, Sting! You know what really pis_ _ es me off is when a dragstrip has been in the same location for decades, the owner is well off, with no desire to sell, and houses get built near it, and then they cry about noise. If ya dont like noise, who in the flyin' you know what moves next to a racetrack, then cries about noise?!! I know of a drag strip in Lapeer Michigan that was bought a few years back. Been there since 1968! Guy who bought it tore up the old track, then proceeded to pave the track with concrete(!), a full 1/2 mile-both lanes. The owner is a guy I worked with who won an $11,000,000.00 lawsuit against the sheriff's department. He's busted his *** fixing it up (can't imagine the $$$$$ 1/2 mile of concrete cost him!), and all these new locals are constantly trying to shut him down. Sucks.....
It's not just dragstrips, either. There's an oval track near me, that was opened for business in 1956......and was in the "boondocks" at the time. Same story, little by little, people built houses near the track, then bitched about the noise. The original owners died, others took it over, but now the track runs only 6 shows a year......

The original owner of Lapeer dragway used to offer free admission every weekend for anyone who lived within like a 1/2 mile(?) radius of the strip. This is really smart business thinking. It worked for him for a half century. I'll have to run this by Bill, the new owner. Nothing ventured, nothing gained......

The track that I was referring to, in that rural town, was covered by a volunteer fire department. And the original owners of the track used to host a chicken Bar-B-Q, twice a year, as a fund raiser for the FD. I have a feeling that helped to "grease the skids" with the town's politicians.....
