Does anyone know of a good shop in Western Connecticut that performs auto glass repair. I have a 2004 CE hatchback and my passenger side window has a scratch in it. It is fairly deep, if you run your fingernail across the scratch you can feel the depression.
I took the car to my local SafeLite glass company and they told me it was an OEM dealer item and they could not get one. I went to my local GM dealer and the parts department told me that the glass window is discontinued. I know that there are several after market companies that will sell the glass separately, but then I would need to install it.
I am looking for a company that could either repair the crack or replace the window completely, including installation.
On the glass polishing It will work but it is a time consuming deal. You need to do it but keep it wet and not get the glass too hot on the side windows.
I did the side glass in my Pontiac as it scratched when the pads got hard and scratched the glass. I had the glass of the car on a bench to fo it. The powder is abrasive so you do not want it paint so tape off the car with plastic.
To be honest the replacement glass is the best deal One it is not hard to put in but if you you like any automotive glass shops should be able to install it for you at a reasonable price.
Note there are limits to how deep a scratch will come out. I have taken out some I did not think would come out with the kit I had. I have both windows clean now. Make sure to investigate what scratched the glass to make sure it does not continue. Finally if anyone does a windshield keep the heat really down on the glass. It can and will warp the plastic liner in the glass and distort the vision. So go slow and low speed on the windshield.
Note if the side glass gets too hot it wil shatter into a million pieces so use care there too.
If the polishing doesn't work out, just about any competent shop can easily replace your door glass. You can almost certainly find one at the bone orchard.
The issue will be that most of the plastic clips and covers will be quite old and brittle and will likely snap as soon as they are disturbed. If you don't use a shop with Corvette experience, then they may not have the knowledge. nor patience to find suitable replacements.
