I just picked up a 2004 base model auto and i’m struggling to find a good torque converter to upgrade too. It’s only got 30k miles and I can’t wait to start digging into it and upgrading everything.I plan to have a nice cam and maybe a blower so i’d like to start by upgrading the TC but so far i’ve had almost no luck finding any good ones with atleast 3000. Would love any links or suggestions and to hear yalls setups.
First decide on what mods you are doing. Get the cam that matches your mods tonthe engine. Then take te gear ratio and weight and match all three.
you want the weight of the car and RPM HP range of the cam to match the converter and gear ratio.
Summits web site had a formula or speak sales once you figure what you are doing.
You just don’t buy a converter you need to match the parts or the thing will never run right. A mid to high range rpm cam will not work well unless the converter is matched for the needed rpm. Same on intake and heads.
I upgraded my diff to a 3.73 gear and YankSS3200 stall. I may do top end rebuild in the future with a strong midrange cam. 3200 stall was chosen because I do HPDE once in awhile. With this setup, hardly any converter whine at all. If you plan on supercharging the car, you probably don’t want any converter over 3200, you will just be breaking tires loose through first and second gear. Yank3200 is also very reliable, many have been running them for 10+ years.
if your going for drag times get a 4,000+ stall, and slicks.
Precision Industries Vigalante is what you seek.
Call them and give them your mods etc. I would swap in a 3:42 gear from a z06 or a 3:73 aftermarket.
Gear and converter will wake up the car. Here is a catch. If your going to do a blower you will need a tighter converter so you don’t blow through it with a couple hundred extra HP
