I bought the car last year and I keep looking at the stupid ashtray is wide open when I shut it it pops back open I can't imagine that's the way it's supposed to work but I've looked on images in the spring looks the same as mine but I don't know is that the intended way it was supposed to work just curious the little crap bothers me

You know I might figure it out I think when you shut the second door it kind of shuts the ashtray door and when you open that door ashtrays or just pops open I think that's the correct way it works just never realize that

It is pretty dumb that they put a door there that can’t be closed. Why bother?

Hate to tell you but having the ashtray door pop open is how it was designed.

It’s an ashtray so it was designed with a second, hinged lid to keep the ashes inside the tray when not in use. It was a design concept that was a carry-over from similar pull-out ashtrays that had lids that would pop open when you pulled out the tray to smoke. I agree it's a pretty bad design considering it closes vertically, but that was the concept.

I have never smoked but remember those old-school ash trays in my parent’s cars. I also remember how some drivers used to dump the trays out on the side of the road or when stopped at an intersection. Nasty!

Hard to believe that people actually smoked in Corvettes, but since I don't smoke, I removed the ashtray and repurposed the cigarette lighter into a USB port when I installed my double din system.
