Default C5 automatic axle difference

How big of a chance is the 2.73 vs the 3.15 for the automatics as I'm really struggling finding a 3.15 auto

on another note how much does it cost on average to upgrade to 3.42 gears? I've heard its difficult (plus I don't have a lift) so ill probably bring it to a shop and have them do it

There is a difference but the 3:42 is definitely the way to go. You can buy a z06 takeout diff with the 3:42 for under a $1000
A 3:42 and a 2800 stall converter will wake up a stock c5 big time.

It will definitely wake the car up some. Personally, I would at least get a 3200 stall.
Cost?
1,000 for a decent converter
900-1,000 for install and tuning at a reputable shop
1,000 for a used diff.
taxes, 280
shipping on a differential can be 150
your in it 3,500 already…

It does make a pretty good difference, however if going through the trouble of changing it out might as well go with a 3.42. Either are readily available on ebay, and remember either one will require a tune to fix the shift points. I have been in plenty of 2.73 equipped and my 3.15 equipped feels much snappier. That being said when I get into the drivetrain I am going with a 3.42 over my 3.15.

That was my point. If you're going to swap anything might as well swap to a 3.42. If you're hellbent on a factory equipped 3.15 I get it. If you get a 2.73 and swap a 3.15 in it will still need a tune however. The plus is a 3.15 diff on ebay is much less than a 3.42 cost wise though shipping will still sting a bit.

Just buy a C5 with the Z51 option. Then you will get the 3.15 gears and a bunch of other desirable options!!

I ordered mine that way.

If your looking at a potential purchase the build codes are on the inside glove box door 99 and up I believe. G92 is a 3.15 axle, GU2 is 2.73

If you do buy a new diff, make sure it is a 3 rib! And you might find 2 different 3.42's if you are shopping around, standard 3.42 and the 3.42 SP (Shot Peened) which is what was in the Z06. The 3.42SP will have a unique GETRAG tag on it as well for the "SP"
