I had a B&M shifter in my 98, hated it. But, I have B&M shifters in both of my 99s and love them. I have a MGW shifter in my 02 and love that too. I did the anti-venom mod also..
At my go to Vette mechanic's recommendation, I put in a MGW. Some but not much difference from the stock.
As in they aren't made of much different metals? The difference between stock and an MGW is like apples and tomatoes. I fall into the less impressed by the MGW bucket than most. But compared to stock the difference is dramatic. The stock stick is sloppy and rows like a boat. The MGW is a very tight throw (almost too tight IMO) and very precise. But it loosens up slightly (breaks in) after a few drives (in a good way). However, it did take me some getting used to when slamming gears due to the tight pattern. I had to adjust my technique not to put it in the wrong gear on spirited upshifts.
In my experience Hurst (older model) shifters had a bit of a rattle to them. Both mine and my brothers did the same thing. We both tried different ***** that did not rattle with my B&M. But throws were decent not great. Maybe better today in 2024?
The B&M ripper was a bit crude and was not enjoyable when soft shifting (more like trying to soft shift around town). But when slamming gears I never missed with the B&M. Using a lot of force when cruising around gets old quick though.
Of the three I mentioned above the MGW is the much better of them all. Due to smooth engagement, shift effort and short throw pattern. All drastically different from the stock boat oar. Especially a broken in one.
MGW here. I tired the Hinson but it was to short and rattled. It would work great in a race car but it was work dong 6-4 shifts. But did the MGW and never looked back.
the big issue here is most (all) aftermarket shifters cost more than the MGW with out the lower box, which is the biggest reason for crappy shifting !! the TMODCustoms is a great product also !!
It's really not fair to judge any shifter on a stock box against another with the box addressed. They are all personal preference obviously, but anyone who likes a shifter on a stock box would love it on an upgraded box, no question.
When looking at C6 shifters to replace a C5 shifter (or send to TMOD), I noticed many different part numbers. Any significant differences in these variants?
