Personally, I would want nothing in the way of my leg there regardless of the car being stick or auto.
Arm rest. Glove box. Behind the seats. Fuel tank deck at front of trunk. All good spots for easy access items.
If you're thinking 2A, I have a small 9mm which I just put face down in the nook on the passenger seatbelt clip area. Fits like a glove.
