I recently just bought a 1999 c5 and it is completely stock. I was thinking about doing a muffler delete for a cheap sound improvement, but I’m not sure if there are any side affects to doing it. I’m planning on doing some light modifications, to make it a track/auto cross/street car. Would there be any performance issues doing this? I’m not too worried about performance exhaust, rather just for the sound.
I did this with my Z06 (my exhaust tips have resonators in them). Can't speak for any performance gain, and since it's aft of the cats, I'm sure would be minimal at best. Obviously louder all the way around, with some drone at certain speeds/rpms, which can also create a bit of harmonic rattle or vibration. It's been fun but it may be getting a bit old for me, so see if you can find someone who has it in your area and see for yourself first. But I've certainly got some thumbs up from various people, and it's not out and out obnoxious as the cats do muffle the sound to some extent.
For decent sound at attractive prices the bypass mod is the way to go. Does not in any way limit your ability to go further later, or even revert to stock if desired. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ypass-mod.html
I have cutouts on my supercharged 99 which is basically the same as having no mufflers. Sounds great at ideal but has bigtime drone at highway speeds. I put in aa lot of sound deadening and sound absorbing material which helped cut down the drone but the drone was still annoying. Now i run the exhaust thru the Z06 titanium mufflers and no more drone.

I would agree with this - a lot of drone would drive me nuts.
I bought my C5 with rear silencers removed and replaced very neatly with stainless pipes and tips. The seller also gave me the ones he'd removed which were custom stainless items, but I've not seen the need to refit them. Noise wise, it's quite loud on original start up, but cruises very quietly and only gets loud when you open it up. The seller commented that he had a drone when cruising with the system he removed, and there is none now when cruising at 70 - 80 mph.
