I know this is going back in time but Chevy did the same thing with the 1963 Z06 package bringing it forward to 2001. The Z-16 package was the Super Sport package on a 1965 Malibu. It came with a 396 V-8. Wouldn't it be interesting if Chevy transformed the LS6 into a 396 SS.
The history of the Super Sport is presented on page 48 of the March issue of Motor Trend.
Lots of rumors in the papers about Detroit going back to the Muscle cars. Ford with 427 V-10 550 HP sedan, the GT (GT40), GTO, Chevy with SS 430HP sedan. If so, I would think they would need a corvette option with much more HP than their 4 door family like sports sedans:)
Those sedans may very well have more HP than a vette, but and this is a big but...they weigh many hunreds pounds more ...in some cases a 1000lbs more. They will not accelerate as fast as a vette or handle as well, but the engine will sure be powerful (if that means anything when you are lugging around that much weight). But I really think chevy needs to step up the HP/TW a notch or two.
I agree with GCubed. The HP war is on and no doubt the C6 will have some nice numbers. 400HP will be available on many cars in the next couple years. It is weird to think about but 400HP doesn't seem as much as it used to - even though it was supercar/supertuner power just a couple years ago. I think the Z16 will have a HP boost somewhere between 420-440HP. They stayed true to the Z06 label with real performance and every Z16 package offered in the past has meant performance ad-ons (Chevelle, 96 GS, etc). Maybe the Z16 package will preview some C6 technology -we've already heard rumors of 6 liters, carbon-fiber brakes, magnetic suspension. I'm just worried about what it'll cost. I can't pop for a $60k+ Z16 Z06.
