I have a 2001 C5, 53000 miles. While driving the other day my clutch pedal began failing to return. I was able to lift it with my foot to get home. After looking at several posts and videos, I checked the fluid in the master cylinder reservoir and it was very filtthy. I have drained and replaced the fluid 6 times, also following several posts and videos to bleed the system by pumping the clutch about 40 times after filling. While the fluid is now nice and clear, I cannot shift into any gear while the car running. Any thoughts would be apreciated.
bleed the system by pumping the clutch about 40 times after filling
This does not bleed the clutch
It is usually hydraulic like brakes. One person push clutch to floor and hold like brake pedal. another person physically uncorks the clutch system to let out the air and fluid. Then immediately close the hydraulic system, lift the clutch pedal stroke to bring in fluid, top off reservoir, then repeat this process
its hard to tell whether this was done the way you described it
sounds like its just full of air still or the hydraulic slave has failed somehow
Next step put in a remote clutch bleeder, I did it without pulling transmission but it was still not easy.
Actually the hardest part was due to bending and breaking the exhaust manifold to pipe bolts on each side, removing the broken bolts to replace.
You take off your exhaust mid section and then the transmission tunnel plate, hopefully you don’t have huge hands and forearms so you can maneuver in the cramped area to reach bleeder.
