New member/old man here, my wife's C5 would not shift after pulling into garage last week....broken shift cable..I have the car raised and am pulling the front exhaust and torq tube cover now....can anyone tell me how the cable fits into the front bracket? it is U shaped and the cable had two small flexible tabs..( second version cable).do they go to the top? hard to find a new cable anywhere, except this e-bay stuff.....tried with no luck to install with exhaust up...no luck...any tips anyone can give would sure be nice....thanks for any help
cable is broken, just need to know how forward retainer is held in bracket, located in tunnel behind shifter..has two small tabs at top I believe..waited so long trying to find cable I forgot how it fits in there
I ran into this problem a couple of months ago. While reversing in a parking lot, the shifter cable popped out of its mounting location above the torque tube. At first, I thought the bushing at either the transmission side or the shifter side had come loose. But after removing the shifter, I saw that the cable was still connected it had just come out of the U-bracket mount.
There's a plastic clip on the end of the shifter cable that has a slot, which is supposed to snap into the U-bracket. To check if you need a new cable, clip it back into the bracket you should be able to pull the cable as if it’s still connected to the shifter. If it feels loose, it’s probably broken. But if it’s firm and still shifts into gear, the cable is still good.
The angle is a bit tricky to work with, and it’s hard to see, so I had to feel around for the thin slot on the clip and guide it back onto the bracket by touch. I’m not sure what caused it to pop out in the first place, but I ended up using a zip tie to keep it securely in place. The hardest part for me was getting the transmission side aligned with the shifter.
you guys are all correct ! the small plastic piece broke and fell off when the plastic retainer jumped out...bushings bad at both ends also......I'm this far and wish I could get a GM cable....been looking all over with no luck......will be easier to get to and route correctly with torq tube cover down...I think the tabs and the sliding lock go to the top??????????
they show it backordered.....just like everyone else......darn the bad luck, I'm pretty sure it was me that finished it off trying to move it to pull it off the front bracket

Just talked to my local Chevrolet dealer today, as mine did this today when I returned home -- all good, until it wasn't. lol. My auto shifter moves like a manual now... glad I had it in park, before the shifter cable went out. Chevy told me that they no longer make this cable - maybe you can find a GM surplus somewhere online. After market for my car and I'm having it towed to a garage to be fixed. There's a Corvette shop in Florida that sells better corvette part replacements and they have a youtube video about this, and also about harmonic balancer replacement parts for vettes. C & S Corvettes- you may want to check them out, if you don't have the part yet. Hope you get it fixed soon. Share videos or photos if you have the time. I have a 1k estimate for this repair as an FYI. Waiting for a 2nd garage to send me an estimate tomorrow morning.
My original shift cable (grommets) on my 2004 lasted 11 years as I replaced the cable back in 2015. Since then I have added a supercharger and headers so I'm considering some preventive maintenance to swap out the bushings as heat (now more heat) is the primary cause of the nylon grommets breaking down and disconnecting the cable. I can't believe dealerships are now asking $1K+ for the repair. Back in 2015, it cost me a little over $500 and that included the flat-bed tow from my home.
In searching for the nylon grommets replacement and repair kits, I ran across this offering on e-Bay and wonder if anyone has tried them as they claim to be better than the OEM and replacement kit grommets as they are made of a heavy duty polymer vs. nylon.
just finished the job...would not wish this on anyone!!..did it without pulling the front exhaust and torq tube cover down, only because the manifold to pipe nuts were badly siezed...you guys helped a bunch!....someone needs to make a good quality replacement cable..I will report back again after a long test drive, but it feels good....the Chinese can make most anything (half assed)......did I just say that? sorry its a hot day here!
If the front end of the cable pops off, the car can be shifted and driven after the shifter is removed which isn't that difficult. It's a big problem if the back end of the cable pops off. I made a retainer that clamps on the transmission shift arm so if the grommet ever fails, the cable end can't come off so the car can be started and driven. The steel shift arm is hardened so drilling through it with normal drill bits won't work that's why the block is held on by the two sides that clamp to the arm. In case anyone wants to make one, here's what it looks like assembled:
those days are over! local Chev. dealer quoted $150 for cable yesterday..on eternal backorder! cant find one at any vette vendor either .The one I installed was $25 on the bay....looks only OK at best. We will see....Thanks to you all
Just make sure it's the correct fit for your car. Amazon indicates the cable on the link you shared does not fit my 2004 C5 as I think the 2004 cable is the same one shared with the 2005 C6. Not sure what the differences are.

That's weird. I selected 99, 00, 03, and all asked to select the transmission type as the final step. When I did 04, it didn't ask for that. It might be a glitch in their system, but as long as the part number is correct, you should be good.
