Looking for some advice
I've been a fan of corvettes for a long time now, but am finally starting to seriously consider pulling the trigger and getting my first vette. Looking for a dual duty autocross and weekend fun car. I really like the C4/C5 gens (popups rule!), and after doing some research am pretty sure that I would be most interested in a 2001+ C5 due to a combination of availability, the LS1, and the general upgrades over earlier C5s. Ideally would like to find a car that won't become a maintenance nightmare. I'm not the most experienced beyond basic maintenance but I am mechanically inclined and happy to learn, just don't want the type of car that I work on or send to the shop more than I drive. I understand that any car pushing 25years old will not be perfect but is this an unrealistic expectation with C5s?
Any advice you guys have for someone new to the C5 and looking to get into one? Specific things to look for besides the common harmonic balancer issues? Is anyone willing to share how their C5 ownership has been and any tips and tricks to finding and maintaining a good vette they've learned?
Thanks!
Now be aware track time can and will bring wear and broken parts. Things like clutches, brakes and such can wear or fail. Couplers with age can tear etc. Many of these things if you can wrench are not hard to fix but if you are paying for repairs then prepare a budget.
Same on tires.
Generally you can beat on a C5 and get away with much. But remember one mistake in a corner can put you in a tire wall. Can you afford that. Reward come with risks.
Might consider autocross. It is nearly as fun and much easier on the car and your wallet. It is also a good place to start before you do go track time. You learn to drive and you will learn the car better.
But the years and car you chose are your best place to start.
