Default UH-OH!!! It Happened Again!

This time the big brown truck backed up to the garage, brought me a HEAVY box!
Why they would want to put all these, plus the pads and hardware, in one box, trying to give me and the UPS guy a hernia I guess!

Lemme guess -- RockAuto? Yeah, they like to put brake rotors in one box. Heavy as all hell. But then thats what a two-wheel cart is for.

Nope, R1 Concepts kit off of amazon, Geomet coated rotors and ceramic pads, and quite a bit cheaper than RockAuto for the same kit.
Got it for $260, but it is up to about $307 now.

I also just discovered something unexpected after examining the new rotors.
The front rotors are directional, and not talking about just the drilled holes and slots, but the vanes inside are directional.
When I looked on the R1 Concepts website it basically said direction didn't matter, that the rotors had straight bi-directional internal cooling vanes, but the ones that came in the kit are directional.
Now, they do have directional drill holes and slots, and they are done correctly for the directional internal vanes, which is opposite direction from the drilled holes/slots.
Now, I haven't looked at the base oem rotors, but I don't think they are directional, no left and right listings, although the later C6 and up Z51 and big Z06 rotors may be.
Anyway, interesting unexpected bonus.

Actually the OEM rotors are directional as the cooling vanes are slanted so that air is pulled through. If you look at the rear OEM rotors, they are stamped RR or LR...I do not remember for sure if the front are or not.
I purchased a set of drilled rotors from a company, they sent me two front lefts and two rear lefts. After many emails back and forth they told me that there was no difference even after I sent several pictures showing the angled cooling vanes. They stopped responding and I still have all four of them sitting in boxes on the floor for over two years now. VISA refunded me 100%. No idea if they ever got the money from that company or not.

Anyways, sad to hear that R1 Concepts has the same supplier of rotors as the company I used.
I have yet to convince myself that I would probably be fine using all left side rotors for normal street driving....like I said, been over two years....but still have not convinced myself yet.
Perhaps you can convince yourself.
Curious to read what others will have to say about this.

Okay, well I stand corrected, just looked at rockauto.com and they are listed left and right.
But, if the rotors are installed according to the drill holes and slots, they will be oriented correctly for the cooling vanes to draw air as designed.
I think what I read on R1 website was just a generic note of whether it makes a difference which direction to install the rotors, not talking about rotors with directional vanes.
And, I will look more closely at the rear rotors, both front and rear are specific left and right, with opposing drill patterns for the holes and slots.

Only the vanes in the center of the rotor matter. The holes and slots are cosmetic only.

The holes no longer outgas pads as pads no longer out gas. Slots clean rotors no matter direction.

Rotors are heat sinks and they are designed to absorb heat from the pads. The holes generally create less heat sink and higher temps. There is no real sir flow through them. This is why they are not recommend for track time.

years ago they did help out gas in organic pads by they were drilled more for weight reduction on race cars that threw them away after one race. Also the cars were much lighter.

So, thought I'd throw these new rotors and pads on today, figured I could knock it out in 3 hours or so...

WRONG!!!

Started just after noon, took the test drive about 7:15 this evening.

Couldn't just throw them on, had to do some cleaning and touch up, and this old man's back kept screaming, telling me I had to stop crouching down and hunching over working on this thing!
So, I did have to take some breaks to deal with the pain.
But, now I don't have plain and ugly rusty rotors on my Corvette anymore!!!
