Hello i just bought an aftermarket shift ****. i am wondering how the stock shift **** comes off. I don't see any screws or anything. could someone please help me. the new one i got is made by autotecnica and was told that it would fit. my car is a 2002 Z06. thanks for the help. Brian
You've come to the right place. I'll give you my two-cents, but there are many tech tips here (see the tech tips under the Tools button, above!) that discuss this. Here's one: https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...D=28&TopicID=1
There is no set screw, so don't bother looking.
Pop the shift pattern cap off with a little screwdriver. This is easy.
Grab the "Devil Pin" under that cap with a vise-grip. Don't go crazy, because it's cheap pot metal. Wiggle it side to side while pulling up. Do not put your face behind the vise grip!!! The pin is very stubborn.....grown men have broken down in tears trying to remove this horrible thing. Wiggle, pull, wiggle, pull...pull harder....if you're lucky, it will come out easy. Mine always have. Others here will tell you their nightmare stories.
Once the Devil Pin is out, sinply unscrew the ****. You're done. Or, rather, you're HALFWAY done.
Remove Shift ****:
Pry up the plastic shift pattern on the tip of the shift ****. Remove
the aluminum pressure pin using a flat head screw driver and a vise-grip.
Fasten the vise grip to the pin and insert screw driver under tab and
pry up. Note: If pin won’t move use some spray lube or liquid wrench to
loosen up. Unscrew the shift ****.
**Note** Removing the lock pin has known to be a major :reddevil at times!!
pry off shift pattern cap with small screwdriver, grasp wedgewith vice grips
standing up vertically insert screwdriver trough hole in grips put rag on front
of shift **** and find a 1"x2" lay it across front of **** on rag and pry up
with screwdriver on wood as a fulcrum. T here are instructions showing this
procedure in help section of forum.. :hurray: :hurray:

I know you didn't ask this, but if you are inclined to replace your shifter and boot also, you do not need to mess with the "demon key". Simply pull up the boot, undo the bolts that hold the shifter, replace the whole thing using your new shorter boot.
when removing the pin I used a small vise grip on the pin. then I clamped a standard size vise grip at 90 deg. to the small vise grip. taped it upward with a hammer. two light tapes it was out and in good shape should you ever want to reistall it later. (the small vise grips should have a good tip) ;)
