Hi Folks, I’m on my 3rd C5 but never saw this problem before. I don’t know if it’s fading or what, but no amount of rubbing gets rid of the white ‘stuff’. It sortof ‘ends’ at the targa ‘bar’. Has anyone ever encountered this and if you fixed it, what did you do? Thanks!
I have the exact same condition. I have tried all sorts of cleaners and treatments with no help. I am now down to painting.
Glad I’m not alone.
Not sure if I want to mask it all off and spray it or brush it on, tho’ I still would mask. However since this looks like the ‘opposite’ of a stain, I might try some kind of ‘bumper black’ first.
I’ll post any ‘developments’.
Bumper black is one of the treatments I tried. The surface seems really hard and may not allow anything to soak in. Before I paint mine, and I will spray it, I am going to try lightly sanding a small spot and see if that helps something like the bumper black.

In any of my three C5s I never had that area look like that. It does almost look like something took the finish off that area. Maybe check with a good body shop that has experience with Corvettes and see what they recommend.
My 2004 Vert had this issue when I purchased it. Like above, I tried cleaning it....that did nothing. Tried a light sanding.....nope. Tried "Back to Black"...another nope. Then I found "That Black Stuff" satin black trim restorer.....YES!!! I did washed the area, let it dry for a day...does not take much time for water to evaporate here in Tucson....anyways, applied painters tape to the body, removed the truck lid, removed the screws along the sides.
Then it is just a matter of using a small sponge or rag to apply this stuff....WEAR GLOVES..... I let it dry and applied a second coat, which did not make much difference. Looks brand new again.
I put all of this into a thread when I did it a couple of years back. Seach for my name, you'll find the pictures.
Thread was titled: Area around trunk lid when open.....or something like that.
Thanks folks. After trying one of those “Back to Black” products with no results, I decided to paint the area with satin black . I think it came out pretty good and it no longer shouts ‘WTH happened to that plastic?”
