I drove my 93 LT1 to the dealer last Thursday evening with the intent of test driving a Z06 .. 'to see what they were like'. At 9pm, I drove out in a new torch red 2003 Z06. Talk about night and day. The 93 was a great car, but the Z06 is in another league. Even though I am still running the engine in, I am very, very impressed so far. Which brings me to my first question: I have read the paragraph in the owners manual about running the engine in, but was wondering what the general concensus was on how many miles to cover before stretching the engine?
I have been an avvid reader of CorvetteForum since moving here from Australia and purchasing the 93, 2.5 years ago, and look forward to participating in the Z06 discussion.
I come from the fairly conservative school on breaking in a new motor, and to that end I suggest keeping RPM's below 3500 for the first 200 miles and the add 500 RPM thereafter, avoiding anything near redline until you have at least 500 miles on the car. Also avoid steady speed driving, varying RPM/speed is important during break-in.
Some believe if you drive it "like you stole it" from mile one that the car will somehow "learn" to be fast. That is the funniest thing I have ever heard, and I suggest you ignore such advise. My Z is plenty quick, and I didn't have to abuse it nor risk premature catastrophic failure to make it that way, power is physics, not folklore.
Just my .02.

Hey, Congrats, man. I've had my QS 03 ZO6 since Wednesday, and have only racked up 230miles thus far. But, I don't think I've seen more than 4500rpms yet, and most of the time, I'm shifting before I tach 4000. I plan to do so for the first 500 miles, then I think I'll start getting in it, and I think that's when the fun begins (as if it hasn't already).
But, boy, aren't these things great? I had a '00 Mustang I was building, just went to the dealer for the hell of it with no intention of buying but testdrove one anyways, and one day later, I was signing my life away for the ZO6 and cancelling the Mustang project. I don't regret it one bit, and I doubt I ever will.
Congrats, welcome to the club from a pretty new member himself. :jester
These cars are awsome! Congrats on the new addition and welcome to the Z06 club!
For break in, I would try to keep it below 50-60 mph and 4000 rpm during the first 500 miles. Also go easy on the brakes the first few miles (200) and make sure you don't run it to redline ever without 140-160 degrees of minimum oil temps.
Take it easy on the engine for the first 500, you may have an occasional bout of I ahve to try this out and that probably won't do much damage, but take it easy. This engine can go over 100,000 if cred for.
I've come to the conclusion that if you do not want to purchase on of these machines Dont test Drive one :D Ive had mine since march 7/03. I varied the rpms at first and started to get on it at about 700 miles.
Congrats on your car, these sure are a blast
Congrats, good luck, you got the best all around muscle car on the planet. 0-60 under 4sec, 12sec 1/4 mi 175mph top speed, 20mpg city 30mpg highway!! Welcome
